With the New Year almost upon us it's that time of year to take a look back over the events of 2011, and for me it's been a busy and productive year.

Here are some of the highlights of 2011.

January saw the launch of the second Crime Writers’ Association Young Crime Writers Competition 2011. I was the judge of the South Coast entries with the winner going forward for the National prize which was announced during National Crime Writing Week 13 - 19 June. …

Good reviews for Rowson's DI Horton Crime Novel, Dead Man's Wharf, from down under

It's always nice to get good reviews particularly if they come from readers, and to know that they are enjoying your novels, so I was pleased to receive two new book reviews from Australia, for Dead Man's Wharf the fourth in the DI Andy Horton series of crime novels.

"Pauline Rowson has the ability to make you want to keep reading, to find out the answers to the growing pile of questions. Those…

Crime author Pauline Rowson on choosing the right titles for crime novels

How do you come up with titles for your crime novels?

Dead Man's Wharf by Pauline Rowson With great difficulty or considerable ease is the answer. Some titles can come instantly, almost the moment the novel hits the page (or rather the computer screen) Dead Man's Wharf was one such case. Others are like pregnancy, taking months to develop and even when the novel is…

Re-Brand Without the Sex

In this rapidly changing industry, writers must adapt on a near-daily basis and continuously search for new ways to reach new readers. In that mode, I’ve decided to re-brand my Detective Jackson series by listing Secrets to Die For as the first book and creating a new cover for it. The old cover was never meant to be the final product, but that's another…

Writing a Crime Novel - plotting, researching and writing the crime novel, new talk at CSI Portsmouth by Pauline Rowson

Unfortunately owing to personal circumstances Dr Neil McCaw whose talk was to be on Victorian Crime Fiction at CSI Portsmouth on Saturday 5 November has had to withdraw from the programme. I will be stepping in to take his place in addition to being on the panel event in the afternoon.  I won't be talking about Victorian Crime Fiction though but about writing a crime novel.  My talk will take place in the morning… Continue

Crime author Pauline Rowson on the business of writing crime fiction

I'm often asked if I get writer's block and while I haven't suffered this there are days when the words flow and the inspiration seems to come from an unknown source within me, and there are also days when it's a struggle to find the right words and know how to advance the plot.  Every writer deals with this differently. Me?  Well there are three ways I tackle this, depending on my mood (and the weather):

1. I keep writing, bashing anything out on the keyboard even though I know…

Brattleboro: Vermont's Hotbed Of Fictional Crime

Brattleboro, Vt., is a bucolic town — pricked with picturesque church steeples — and home to a vibrant arts community. So it's an unlikely setting for gruesome murder and gritty crime, but that's just what goes on in Archer Mayor's Brattleboro-based Joe Gunther detective series.

Mayor is something of an unlikely character himself. Never mind his New England blue blood background — Mayor has had some grisly jobs. He works as a death examiner for the state's medical office and…

Delighted to see that Ed McBain's novels are to be reprinted and proud that USA reviews have compared my writing to McBain's

The news that Amazon Publishing has bought almost 50 titles written by the late crime author Ed McBain has sent ripples of alarm throughout the publishing world as the retailer encroaches ever deeper into publishing, but it has no doubt delighted McBain fans.  I also read the news with a personal interest because my marine mystery police procedural crime novels featuring…
