This is just me but, a great mystery is liking a character enough to be able to slog through a book's worth of trouble for him/her.

It's getting the details right so you don't fall out of belief.

It's feeling an emotional pang about his/her level of commitment and sacrifice.

It's a scenario where the danger is equal to the situation.

And finally, for me, it's the interesting turn of phrase, a sentence that you wish you'd written.
