Sisters in Crime has been doing book events all over the country for as many years as I can remember. I think I remember booking a booth in 1992 for Sisters in Crime at the Miami Book Fair. Since then we’ve always had a presence at Malice Domestic, Bouchercon and the American Library Association Conference. In fact there have only been two library liaisons for Sisters in Crime in fifteen or so years. Could that be? The wonderful Kathy Harig pioneered the job dragging materials all over the country. And then Sisters in Crime was lucky enough to have the always cheerful Doris Ann Norris in the gate for five years. Doris Ann has been tireless, upbeat and always singing the praises of Sisters in Crime and its authors. She will be passing on the demanding job this fall and we will all miss her.
In 2007 Sisters in Crime had a presence at Book Expo in New York, ALA in Washington DC, Malice Domestic and Bouchercon. I don’t even have enough space to mention all the state book festivals, regional ABA’s and conferences all over the country. All were driven by the great volunteers of Sisters in Crime. I often hear from the national representatives of these events and they are always impressed with how many guests our booth attracts and how much fun the authors and volunteers have at the event. As a member of Sisters in Crime you may be interested to know the lineup for 2008.
Keep www.sistersincrime.org bookmarked so you can always be up to date on book event opportunities. The September edition of InSinC, the national newsletter, will also list many of the events for fall 2007 and 2008.
Sisters in Crime will have a booth at The Public Librarians Association Conference in March 25-29, 2008 in Minneapolis. For more information check out www.placonference.org. Volunteers will be needed in this area as we don’t have a chapter in Minneapolis. Send Doris Ann an e-mail if you can pitch in and work at PLA or if you are an author who would like to reserve a signing time at the booth. Doris Ann’s e-mail is DorisAnn@woh.rr.com. Doris Ann has a few more weeks until her retirement so we should keep her busy.
So, if you want to get involved in Sisters in Crime book events are a great way to do it. Many of the events are regional and are coordinated by one of the Sisters in Crime Chapters. It’s a great way to meet friends and enjoy the book business.
