It seems to me that too many young woman are willingly becoming, or advertising themselves as, STOOOOPPPPID! Need I say more than Britany, Paris, and Nicole (with Lindsay and Jessica not far behind).
Sadly, I know too many young girls who willingly going around with nothing but AIR between their ears. I'm not even sure some of them know the meaning of "DUH" because it's more important to wear Aeropostale or Abercrombie & Fitch clothes. One (if not more) wears enough eye make-up to look like a hooker (and 10 years older than her birth date), plus a thong (the most uncomfortable piece of underwear ever perpetrated on a woman, and no doubt by a man), and a forever vapid expression.
Why is talking on a cell phone (and sometimes with a phone in EACH ear) such a badge of honor? What happened to the little girls who loved to READ those Babysitter books? Girls who memorized their times tables and had straight As on their report cards? One young girl I know is hooked on IMing and talking about sex in terms that I (as much older) would be embarrassed to read in an erotic novel.
When I was in high school, many of the girls I knew thought about boys and make-up and clothes, but they also thought about feminism and what we could do to make the future a better place for women. Now feminism is a dirty, shameful word. These young women (or bimbos) don't even worry about the glass ceiling. They're too worried about Victoria's Secret (they don't even know that Victoria is a Victor and selling them uncomfortable underwear at outrageous prices) latest bust-enhancing bra and how popular will they become if they give oral sex to any 14-15 or 16 year-old male that asks them for it.
They don't know (thanks to "abstinence only" government-sanctioned sex education) that they could DIE from sexually transmitted diseases (because if you tell them about condoms that means you APPROVE of underage sex--never mind that they're engaging in it anyway and WITHOUT any facts about STD, AIDS, and the risk of an unwanted pregnancy).
When I was in high school, I worried about WAR, about POVERTY and ...could we actually go where no man (later amended to no one) had gone before?
The female youth of today have taken many steps back from where I was as a teenager.
Is there any hope? After all, just before leaving jail Paris Hilton did say in an interview with Barbara Walters, "I used to act dumb. It was an act. I am 26 years old, and that act is no longer cute." No, it isn't, but look at the damage that "dumb act" has done--not only to her, but young girls and tweens that look up to her.
Actress Danica McKeller (best known as Winnie on "The Wonder Years") has written a book called "Math Doesn't Suck." "When girls see the antics of Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan, they think that being fun and glamorous also means being dumb and irresponsible," McKellar told Newsweek. Go Danica! But how many girls will actually read that book--even if Mom and Dad supply her with a copy?
I suppose the "older generation" (of which, sadly, I have now become) always laments the stupidity of youth. Still, I don't regret my decision not to have children. My cats give me far more pleasure, and a lot less trouble, than a child of today ever would.
Mores the pity.
