It started with a note from someone else, an anonymous writer who found my webpage and wrote to say how much she liked MACBETH'S NIECE. She didn't have to do that, but it was more than welcome in my life at this moment. Talk about throwing someone a lifeline!

Which reminds me of my promise to myself that I would let authors know when I read their books and found them worthwhile. I don't think it matters if you're on the top of the bestseller list or just starting out, specific, sincere praise is always more than welcome.

I also think that a reader can add to the compliment by making it public: a mention on DorothyL or some such group, a reader review on Amazon, a recommendation to friends. The person who wrote to me yesterday promised to recommend the book to her reading group. Wow. Not only kind words, but a chance for more sales. Too cool.

Everybody needs a pat on the back. I'm sure best-selling authors get fan letters all the time, and I'm also certain they appreciate the feedback (hopefully). But, for those of us who are still working our way in and get something published here and there, a 'well done' or 'great story'--anything in the way of a compliment--is so encouraging and as Peg said, a 'lifeline'. It's especially important, I think, to be complimented by other authors who are at any level in their career. It only takes a few minutes to write a short review or express your opinion, but let me tell you from my own personal experience, that couple of minutes the person took really does mean a great deal.

This is a good reminder. I noted my favorite reads of each month on my blog for a while, then fell out of the habit. I'll have to get with it again, if only for the good karma of letting authors know they're appreciated, however indirectly.

I agree completely. And I'll make a point of letting authors know when I really like a book, though I don't do blurbs or reviews. And I think a bit of praise helps not only starting authors but all authors.
