Preston rubbed a hand over his forehead, wincing as his fingertips felt the scars. “Not much that I’m actually able to do,” he grumbled. “I refuse to get hooked into stuffing envelopes.”

Tabitha chuckled. “Most of those as scams you know so yeah play keep-away from that.” She looked at the page he’d pulled up. “How are your writing skills?” she asked, tapping the screen.

“I only have a high school education, how do you think they are?”

“Preston,” she said firmly, “that does not mean you’re stupid or illiterate. What about this idea.” She pointed. “Do you have any computer skills besides knowing how to surf the net and deal with e-mails?”

He smiled, his crooked but appealing grin warming her heart. “Actually, yes. Before I came here, in the last place I thought about maybe putting down roots, I met a guy who designed web sites. We became, well you know, but anyway he taught me a lot about it and apparently I have the knack.”

“There you go then. That’s one idea and I bet you’d never have to meet your clients face to face.”

“That would be a deal breaker wouldn’t it,” he replied even though he valued that fact that she trusted him enough to know that he could handle her honesty.

“Possibly,” she said. “But don’t underestimate people. Once they know you you’ll win them over and they’ll forget the scars.”

“Right, Tabby Cat, that’ll happen when pigs fly. So anyway, yeah I might, maybe, can set up an on-line business to design web sites. I’ll need to brush up on my skills but there are plenty of places I can do that. The problem’s going to be selling myself since I’ve never done it professionally.”

“Everyone has to start somewhere. Once you feel confident why don’t you…humm…look for a particularly bad site, draft up ideas for how to improve it and send them off to the company’s CEO or whatever.”

He thought about that and nodded slowly. “That could work and then I’ll be able to put in my fair share of the household expenses. That is of course if you’ll still let me stay here.”

“Pres I wouldn’t have it any other way. Where else am I going to find someone who can cook as well as you do. I swear I’ve put on ten pounds already and god knows I don’t need them.”

He swung around to look at her appraisingly. “You look just fine to me. But then I’ve always liked full-figured women.”

Tabitha snorted. “This coming from a man that never looks at females if there’s a male around.”

“I looked, women are lovely creatures on the whole, I just prefer a good muscular body to a soft, curvy one on a personal level. Although it’s all a moot point now.” He turned back to the computer, tapping the keys as he began searching again.

It doesn’t have to be,’ she thought, knowing that she’d probably never convince him of that.
