As a mystery/suspense author and an avid mystery reader, I'm constantly amazed at the number of books out there to choose from. And, with so many "free" books available, I'm seeing a trend lately.

Readers are downloading the free books and the books that are on sale and they seem to be less inclined to pay full price. Even if full price for an eBook is less than $3.99. It reminds me of the old saying, "Why buy the cow when you can get the milk for free?"

Which, I think, is sad. I know most of us live on a budget. Believe me, I know. But, if we don't support authors, how can we expect them to keep writing the books that give us hours of entertainment and escape? Would we expect a plumber to work for free?

At this point, I should clarify. There's nothing wrong with an author/publisher offering a book for free. It can be an effective marketing tool. And, as readers, there's nothing wrong with downloading free books but we need to buy books occasionally too.

My publisher refuses to do free promotions and I respect him for that. But, as a businessman, he knows the value of putting items on sale and he has agreed to reduce the price of all four of the books in my Malone mystery series for a limited time.

So, if you haven't read my series yet or haven't read all four books, here's an opportunity to catch up before the fifth book is released in early 2017. Happy reading!
