MORAL DILEMMA QUERY

This is a fast forward to chapter 18 of the story Moral Dilemma. In a nutshell in order to set up this chapter I will reveal bit of the preceding chapters. My hope is to get feedback on this chapter and the main plot of Moral Dilemma.

Jack meets a detective who has clairvoyant episodes. They always occur when a serial killer is in the act of killing his next victim. Often the serial killer hasn’t been discovered by law enforcement. The detective makes a decision to kill serial killers. His motive is to save the lives of further victims. He knew that the normal police procedure would take time and the court system also. This would result in more victims being lost. This particular chapter is about his current serial killer who was thinking of the time he first killed at age 17. It was his dad.

CH. 18 CHUCK VS GRIZZLY

Ramos needed a grizzly bear for Chuck’s passage to manhood. He found a suitable place a quarter of a mile from home to attract a grizzly. It was a natural clearing in a meadow surrounded by a mixture of cottonwood, box elder, ponderosa pine, and rocky mountain juniper trees all living together in peace and tranquility.

Ramos found a suitable tree in the meadow and on a branch ten feet from the ground he placed a hook for the bait with a pulley system to retrieve the hook to replenish the hook for his plan. He then built a blind to view the action and used a special spray to cover the scent of humans. He added the large chunk of frozen salmon he had special ordered to attrack a grizzly. As it thawed it would entice a suitable grizzly.

A large male grizzly caught the smell and arrived to feast on the salmon. He was a grey silver tip with the white hairs sprinkled on his back looking like a light falling of snowflakes on his back. He was huge and ravenous. He stood on his haunches and was easily a ten foot tall example of grizzly intimidation. Ramos set the hook every day at the same time looking forward to his plan.

It was time to talk with his son Chuck. “Son, it’s time for your passage to manhood.”

Now what has this bastard got up his sleeve. “Passage to manhood, what the hell you talking about?”

“It’s worth two thousand to you. I had a similar event when I was seventeen and you’re going to follow through if you want the cash.”

“For two thousand I’ll do it”

“Today then, right now.”

It was set; Ramos grabbed a gunny sack with the frozen salmon and his long barrel twelve gauge that was loaded with his own twelve gauge slugs that would enter the bear’s thick skull killing the bear instantly.

They arrived at the meadow early so Ramos could place the treat on the hook then retreated to the blind and waited. He handed chuck the same Marine Raiders Bowie knife he used when he was seventeen and killed his bear. His kill was accomplished with a thrust into the ear of the bear which ended the bear’s life quickly.

“Now you’re ready to face your challenge.” They were in the blind waiting for the grizzly.

“You want me to face a grizzly armed with a toothpick?”

“Are you man enough to?”

Ramos had struck a chord that challenged his ego.

The silver tip emerged from the trees with his nose in the air smelling the thawed salmon. He ran to the branch with the tasty morsel waiting and stood up on his hind feet to engorge the meal.

Chuck stepped out of the blind revealing his presence. The huge bear turned his head as he bit off a chunk of Salmon. The two stared at each other for a second then the bear continued chewing anticipating his next chomp.

Chuck then picked up a rock and threw it at the bear. The bear got pissed and dropped his front paws to the ground. Then he walked toward Chuck with his eyes penetrating his antagonist. Seven feet from the rock thrower he stood upon his hind legs getting ready to flatten this pest. He raised his nose to the sky emitting a fierce growl. Then---kpow-kpow- two shots struck the bear in his head killing him instantly. Chuck stood there with urine running down his leg as the silver tip bear fell at his feet.

Ramos knew that Chuck was frozen in fear and he grabbed his shotgun with the specially made ammo and killed the animal. The bear landed on Chuck pinning him like a sumo wrestler. Ramos reached down and slowly dragged Chuck free.

“You wimp ass coward, good thing I saved your worthless ass!”

Chuck remained silent as his dad leaned down to inspect the carcass. Suddenly on a response to his dad’s remark Chuck round housed the razor sharp Marine Raider Bowie blade and severed his dad’s head.

Moral Dilemma reminds me of The Black Dahlia with a twist: the son carries the same gene and continues the behavioral pattern. That has some potential worth exploiting.
