I read an article about this in the Wall Street Journal about a year ago. It was more of a historical viewpoint. The US Army actually gathered together several art experts who'd been drafted to help identify and hunt down some of the thousands of pieces of art that the Nazis had stolen from all over Europe during World War II. Fascinating tale. I'm surprised no one has used this for a plot in a mystery novel.
