I'm getting kind sick of the Philadelphia Inquirer turning more and more conservative. I'm gonna start reading my news online, and since I'm infatuated with Australia, I might as well go there. Any liberal or moderate newspapers I can check out? (I did a search at Google Australia, but couldn't find anything.)

news.com.au compiles articles from a number of papers, but it tends towards the trashy material.

One of the best papers that also happens to fall under the above umbrella is The Australian, which focuses more on serious and political issues.

As far as I know, the above are all owned by Rupert Murdoch, whereas the following by John Fairfax. Yes, this makes a big difference.

The other two papers I frequent are the Sydney Morning Herald and Melbourne's The Age (this last one has a slightly stronger focus on the arts).

That pretty much covers the spectrum from trashy to serious. I generally flick through all depending on what mood I'm in.

I'd love to hear some other suggestions if anyone's got 'em! I bet someone does...
I get the email headlines from the Sydney Morning Herald. It's amusing sometimes to see how much news from the US gets headline treatment, and how differently Aussies look at what's going on here. A bit eye-opening sometimes. The Aussie news is quite interesting to read, too.
Daniel, Daniel, Daniel - of course somebody will have a suggestion (VBEG)

I confess I read Murdoch's news.com.au sometimes - mostly for a bloody good laugh (it's always fascinating to read the garbage that they want you to believe).

Dear old Auntie has an excellent news site: http://www.abc.net.au/news

The Age and Sydney Morning Herald: http://www.theage.com.au also link to sister organisations in Brisbane and recently an online only version in Perth.

Unfortunately the good old Herald and Weekly Times doesn't have an online presence - which is a pity because knowing the issues that matter to the sheep farmers in far northern New South Wales has been known to make my day ;)
You know, I never checked out ABC's news before. I'm having a lot of fun reading the comments. news.com.au always gets my back up until I realise what I've fallen for. ABC's got some decent and intelligent conversations going on, even if I don't agree with all the opinions.
Cool -- thanks, guys!
