Appreciating the young'uns
Our local newspaper just published the three winners of the Maine Young Writers Contest this weekend. One in particular blew me away, not because the story was necessarily original (what is?), but because of its execution from such a young person (entrants could only be juniors in high school). So I emailed her principal and asked him to pass along my kudos. This girl's writing really made me want to see more!
What do you do to encourage young writers that you come across? What would you like to do, and what should writers in general do more of - mentoring after-school programs? Writing forums designed for young people? Contests like this one?
