Smashwords, new novel, etc.

My publisher, Night Publishing, has put my first crime novel, The Suicide Game, on Smashwords for free for a limited time. (http://www.smashwords.com/books/view/82711.) Providing copies for free seems like a bizarre way to get sales for the physical book itself, but they seem to think it will work. My question is: has anyone here dealt with Smashwords, and did providing download copies enhance the sales of your actual book? What do you guys think of Smashwords? Just curious.
