NEW RESOURCE FOR CRIME WRITERS

For those writers who do not receive the daily email from QueryTracker, I want to share news of a new book just released and available at Borders and Amazon.com - THE WRITER'S GUIDE TO PSYCHOLOGY: How to Write Accurately About Psychological Disorders, Clinical Treatment and Human Behavior.

The author, Carolyn Kaufman, whose doctorate is in clinical psychology, is a former psychotherapist and currently a full-time psychology professor at Columbus State…

STARTING WITH A "BANG"

Today I have to be in a "killing" mood. Sorry. That's just the way it is.

Good thing it's rainy and windy outside. Don't think a bird would have a chance holding its own. Even the squirrels and chipmunks have gone to ground.

The water is churning on the lake. Not a duck or loon in sight.

Perfect day to write a thriller scene - an entire chapter if I can stay in that place I have to go - see and feel that must be seen and felt. It may take days. For sure, there is… Continue

SEASONS CAN BRING A CHANGE

This past week has been a challenge with temperatures in the very high 90s. I will admit, 96, 97 degree days with or without humidity drains everything out of me, creativity, happiness, the ability to even sleep or desire to eat. (And that's a hard one to whip.)

Nights don't seem to bring any respite and so, upon rising I am even more tired, if possible, than I was when falling on the bed the night before. In truth, I can not imagine living in the deep south. Just watching old film… Continue

YESTERDAY WAS A BOUNTIFUL DAY

Ever have the phone ring right when you're in the middle of writing an inspired passage? Me, too. The benefits of caller ID helps decide if you're going to pick up the phone or let it go to voicemail. Telemarketers usually hang up when the voicemail starts up. (I really do not like telemarketing and in spite of registering with the "NationalDoNotCall List", they still call - usually during the dinner and national news hours.)

So yesterday, when in the middle of the current novel… Continue

Excellent. A check is better than a framed first-place certificate.

That she is. . . . Congrats on winning the MWA New England writing contest. You feel good and you get another credit for your resume. Will the chapter also give you money?

Today I learned I won the monthly writing contest for the New England Chapter of Mystery Writers of America (MWA-NE). Hot Dog. First contest I've ever entered. Sort of compensates just a tad for some of those rejection letters.

I have two series, one of which is in publication -- the James Early mystery series. This one is set in 1949-50 Kansas and involves a sheriff. Yes, it's a western, but with Jeeps rather than horses. A short story writing contest sponsored by the Great Manhattan Mystery Conclave triggered the character of James Early and spawned the first two stories, one that grew out of the great flood of 1952 and the other out of a flood control project launched several years later -- real events in which I placed fictional stories. You can read those two stories on my website. Click on "short stories" and scroll down to "Dead Pool" and "Big Dam Foolishness".
The second series is contemporary, set in southern Wisconsin where I live. As with the James Early series, I first created a character who to me is both interesting and carries a lot of baggage. This time it's a young female defense lawyer. She's a former sheriff's deputy and a Army National Guard MP who lost an arm and a leg in a booby trap in Iraq. The cases that come DL Quinn's way are drawn from real cases I found in newspapers.

Wow! Sounds great. How many queries have you sent out for agents? I sent more than I can count before one took the chance. Good luck and keep trying. :)

Actually Sunday is critique day. In fact I'm leaving in an hour for the meeting. My "kick back and do nothing day is Monday." I have lots of lunches on Monday. Love what I'm doing... don't think I'll make it to Maine this year. bummer

I've had a very successful two weeks of sales. Today's book club was very supportive. I don't have an available weekend until the second week of July. I'm not complaining. Glad you're part of this
