Profile Information

Hometown:
New Orleans (now Portland, Oregon)
About Me:
I'm a writer, editor, and book critic, relocated from New Orleans to Portland, Oregon.

Tight Shot, my first novel, was nominated for an Edgar Award by the Mystery Writers of America. Its sequel, Hot Shot, was roundly ignored by everyone, but was a far better book. These sought-after volumes are both available for $0.01 on Amazon. Get nominated for the Edgar, fail to figure out how to leverage it, and this can be you, too!

I'm also a member of the National Book Critics Circle, and a good percentage of my reviews are in the crime, mystery, and suspense fields.

Journamalistically speaking, my work has appeared in The Washington Post, the Los Angeles Times, The Globe & Mail (Canada), The Oregonian, The Times- Picayune (New Orleans), and Willamette Week, as well as in magazines including Details, Vogue, Publishers Weekly, and Portland Monthly. (And one "true confession" letter to Hustler that I did on a dare.)

I'm also a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame, the ex-husband of Marilyn Monroe, and the spokesman for a popular line of coffeemakers. Oh, wait, that's not me.
I Am A:
Reader, Writer, Editor, Critic
Website:

Books And Authors I Like:
Not gonna say. I certainly have my preferences, but as a critic, I approach each book on its own terms.
Movies And TV Shows I Like:
Tube: The Sopranos, The Wire, Six Feet Under, The Office (UK), Absolutely Fabulous, Fawlty Towers, The Rockford Files, Twin Peaks (season 1), Freaks and Geeks, Strangers With Candy, Wonder Showzen, The Daily Show, The Colbert Report, In Living Color.

(Anybody else watching Mad Men on AMC? I'm still not sure where it's going, but it's pretty to look at.)

Screen: Alfred Hitchcock, Pedro Almodóvar, Russ Meyer, Sam Fuller, Mike Leigh, Douglas Sirk, Mike Judge, John Waters.

Enough about you; let's talk about me, me, me

Thanks for checking out this page. Please note I cannot accept ARCs, galleys, or completed copies of your book. I just can't. Wouldn't be ethical. As a member of the National Book Critics Circle, I wouldn't be able to review it if we had any sort of relationship, and God knows I wouldn't be able to face you in the morning. And neither of us wants that.

Then how do I get my ARCs, my galleys, my books for review? That will have to be my secret, I'm afraid. Like the Lord and Paris Hilton's legal team, I work in mysterious ways.

Because of this, I'll add anyone who asks as a Crimespace "friend" (except commercial concerns)...but please don't misconstrue that as an actual friendship.

Let's keep it superficial and electronic, less personal than a cocktail at Bouchercon. That way everything will stay ethical, and the press will continue to have the fine, fine reputation and respect it holds in the American eye.

Now that we have that out of the way, why not check out...

My webpage & blog, filled with fascinating opinions and spicy tales. Because there's just not enough blogs on the Internet.

My LinkedIn profile...where awkward professionals make hamhanded attempts to "network" and exchange virtual business cards. All the joylessness of a fern bar, none of the mojitos.

And while you're here, why not enjoy the virtual jukebox over there in the left column (no, not there...a little bit down...yeah, there). It's the perfect soundtrack for your criminal lifestyle.

Early Endorsements for “A Circle of Souls”

Linda Fairstein, NYT Bestselling Author: "A fascinating debut - this novel takes the reader to the darkest places in the human soul, from a writer with the authenticity to lead us there. A stunning thriller and an important read."

Judge Judy Sheindlin, star of the Judge Judy Show: "The seminal work of this fine author kept me glued to my chair until the adventure was over and the mystery solved. A great read!"

Book Synopsis:

The sleepy town of Newbury, Connecticut, is shocked when a little girl is found brutally murdered. The town s top detective, perplexed by a complete lack of leads, calls in FBI agent Leia Bines, an expert in cases involving children.

Meanwhile, Dr. Peter Gram, a psychiatrist at Newbury s hospital, searches desperately for the cause of seven-year-old Naya Hastings devastating nightmares. Afraid that she might hurt herself in the midst of a torturous episode, Naya s parents have turned to the bright young doctor as their only hope.

The situations confronting Leia and Peter converge when Naya begins drawing chilling images of murder after being bombarded by the disturbing images in her dreams. Amazingly, her sketches are the only clues to the crime that has panicked Newbury residents. Against her better judgment, Leia explores the clues in Naya s crude drawings, only to set off an alarming chain of events.
In this stunning psychological thriller, innocence gives way to evil, and trust lies forgotten in a web of deceit, fear, and murder.

Kevin - As a former reporter, I love your post - especially your caution not to miscontrue membership as friendship. Made me smile.

Love the Edgar thing.

Promise not to try to hustle you for a review.

Congrats on the Edgar, even if it's fallen into the Amazon bargain basement!

Nice "meeting" you!

Cheryl, who writes romances but always with dead bodies thrown in *LOL*

Welcome! I am newt, slithering from the shallow end of the gene pool, into the open ocean. Sharks are likely to eat me before the salt water kills me, but who wants a quiet life?

Kevin, what happened? You're so ... monochrome! (well, except for the mustard background).

I like the crew cut, though. Makes you look a little older, but still distinguished. ;)

How intriguing...my daughter used to be in New Orleans (moved just before Katrina) and is now in Portland Oregon! I just got back from the Willamette Writers' Conference out there...great people, and I love the city. Loved NOLA too...I'll
have to search out Tight Shot and take a look...I love good stories.

Thanks, Kevin! Art photographer and noir disciple Jim Ferreira shot all my photos. I met Jim through SF's Noir City film festival (well-worth coming down here for, btw).

Are you going to Bouchercon? We can dish over swanky themes songs and Douglas Sirk while sipping a cocktail! :)
