About Me:
Young writer. Either "a genuine literary event" or "that bastard next door nicking our wireless broadband", depending who you ask.

Sarcastic. Odd. Paranoid obsession with aggressive Yaks. Hoping to get rich - in the spiritual karmic sense. Or at least break even.

Loves the fact that Hollywood gets "crime" so completely and utterly wrong, All. The. Time.

First novel: CONTRACT, published by Headline Review, June 2007.

Very not-Hollywood.

Would like everyone to meet his close personal friend, borrowed-wisdom guru and Hitman For Hire, Michael Point

Books And Authors I Like:

Kurt Vonnegut. Recently popped his clogs. So it goes.

Chuck Palahniuk. Recently written some A-Bit-Plop stories. I am Jack's complete disappointment.

Bo Fowler. Nobody knows who he is. But he's brilliant. Read him. Read him NOW.

"Disposal" - an excerpt from Contract

Disposal of a Corpus Delicti, if you want to know, is not as easy as you’d think.

The stink of decomposing meat is the biggest problem. Time, forensic traces, bone-digging dogs, dental records,…

In at the deep end, surrounded by sharks, wearing raw-meat trousers.

People keep acting like I'm mad when I mention how Green I am. Why deny it? I'm a newbie, a n00b, a wannabe, a tryhard. My first novel is published next month - by a decent-sized and perfectly respectable publisher, no less – so I'm permitted, I think, a little quiet smuggery. Fine. But I try to temper that, always, by inserting a thick vein of cynicism into conversations, and people just Don't Like It.

"Yes," I'll say, nodding politely. "I…

I'm sure that's right.
When my editor announced I was such and such in the bookseller list my reaction was 'is that good then?'
Since I don't know what constitutes decent sales ( 10, 000? 100. 000?) I can only worry all the more...

Love the piece about being green.
I'm in danger of becoming Helen 'I'm new to this game' Black...and friends and family laugh when I say it'll probably sell three copies.
When it was published they kept asking if Harpercollins were giving me a launch party!

Simon,
Happy New Year, and all the best in your writing in 2008.

Yes, thanks Simon. Sometimes, though- tale Edgar A.P as an example, great works seem to flow from temporarily deranged minds. Sometimes, I think my best work comes when I've been under a lot of stress, or prehaps had the one too many vino's.
This website is great- a really good concept.

Simon--

Your post impressed me (The one about what you do and all that.) I got some very early rejections that said, "You don't write very well." Ironically, these were those that I respected almost as much as the one (actually the same one twice on different projects) that I received from the Atlantic Montly.

Tenacity is the key. I have books and stories that I have never sent out because they're just not good enough as they are. I often revisit them, consider, then decide to work on them again or to let them lie fallow for another year of two.

Tenacity is the key, but you have to be tenacious and improve as well.

Thanks for your post. I'm going to repost his on your crimespace.

Thanks, folks. Great to meet you all. I'll be checking out everyone's pages for the personal touch over the coming days... things are madcrazyhectic right now. Some interesting (but very labour intensive) marketing strategies being wheeled-out, which are snarling up my time. More as and when...Delete Comment
