Your who/whom solution is too complicated for me. Actually, I often use who intentionally when whom is technically correct, and rarely in dialogue. Sometimes clarity is far more important than grammar or punctuation. See Cormac McCarthy there is a man who not only fractures the rules, he smashes them into tiny pieces. He even passes on quotation marks. Prose poets can get away with that. Most of the rest of us can't.
