I'm offering three books this week in the contests on my blog. They are from two of my favorite mystery series. One is the latest John Ceepak mystery by Chris Grabenstein, Whack A Mole. Grabenstein takes the reader back to the New Jersey shore, where Ceepak and Danny Boyle must deal with a serial killer.

And,…

Deborah Turrell Atkinson at The Poisoned Pen

It was a fun evening at The Poisoned Pen last night. I went to meet Debby Atkinson, author of Fire Prayer. But it was a small group, and, as we waited for Barbara Peters, we introduced ourselves. Mystery and romance author Annette Mahon was there. Annette is originally from Hilo, Hawaii, and came to support Debby. Frederick Ramsay and… Continue

Fire Prayer

Deborah Turrell Atkinson's third Storm Kayama novel, Fire Prayer, is her best mystery yet, an exploration of secrets and culture in the Hawaiian Islands. Storm's trip to Moloka‛i is one more key that unlocks the past, a past that has haunted a small close-knit community.

Storm, a lawyer, accompanies her partner and lover, Ian Hamlin, on a business trip to Moloka‛i,… Continue

Agnes and the Hitman

OK, ladies. Forget about Morelli and Ranger. Shane is the hottest hitman out there. No one does sexy and comic suspense as well as Jennifer Crusie and Bob Mayer. Their new book, Agnes and the Hitman is as much fun as their previous collaboration, Don't Look Down.

Weddings can be murder. And, if things don't go right, Agnes Crandall…

Killer Weekend

Fortunately, Ridley Pearson only makes the reader sweat through four days of tension in his latest thriller, Killer Weekend. Any more days might have caused too much stress for the reader, and for Pearson's Sheriff Walt Fleming.

Fleming was only a rookie cop when he saved Elizabeth Shaler from a knife-wielding intruder. Now, he's the sheriff in Sun Valley, Idaho… Continue

Alafair Burke at The Poisoned Pen

Alafair Burke, author of the recent book, Dead Connection, and the Samantha Kincaid series, appeared at The Poisoned Pen in Scottsdale today. She and Barbara Peters, owner of the bookstore, started out by discussing the fact that they, along with authors Michelle Martinez, Twist Phelan and Tess Gerritsen, all went to Stanford Law School.

Alafair said she worked in the D.A.'s office in Portland, Oregon for five years, which was considered a long time for someone who wanted to teach. She… Continue

Fingerprints and Facelifts

Think "Charlie's Angels" on estrogen. If you're looking for a fun, enjoyable romp, check out Rick Copp's first L.A. Dolls mystery. It won't be lasting literature because it's too "today", but it's an entertaining, campy book.

Twenty-five years ago, Dani, Claire and Tess were hot detectives, the L.A. Dolls. Dani, a Latina, was the leader of the agency. Tess,… Continue

First Drop

Zoё Sharp grabs hold of the reader's throat in the first sentence of the Charlie Fox debut thriller, and never lets go. I was caught with the opening sentence, "For the third time that morning I shut my eyes tight in the absolute and certain knowledge that I was just about to die." Sharp, and Charlie, surprise the reader from page one, and continue the suspense and… Continue

Winners and Summer Celebration Contests

Author J.A. Konrath said today he had 76,994 entries in his contest for four copies of his latest book, Dirty Martini. I didn't have that many entries this week, but I was very surprised to end up with 220 entries. I usually average about 50 entries.

Not for me, although I'm always interested in discovering new writers. Chris Roerden, author of the Agatha Award winning nonfiction book, Don't Murder Your Mystery, is looking for writers. The next edition of her book will be an all-genre edition called Don't Sabotage Your Submissions. She's looking for writers of novels or short stories in any genre to share their best examples of writing techniques.

Library Thing

Have you checked out Library Thing yet? It's at www.librarything.com.

It's fascinating. I spent last night and this morning putting up most of the books I've read this year. It's a way to catalog your personal library or keep track of books you've read. It's also the hot social network out there for people who like to read. You can contact other people who read the same books you do, and find out what else they like.

Raven Black

I just finished Ann Cleeves' award-winning crime novel, Raven Black, and I don't know if I have words to describe it. I feel just as I did when I read Louise Penny's Still Life. I've discovered a wonderful writer, one whose description of a little-known area brings its world to life. She writes wonderful descriptions, and creates fascinating… Continue
