In Praise Of The 'Screeching Diva'

In an age where self-awareness has become a kind of reverse cardinal virtue, Florence Foster Jenkins has become a hero of mine-- a forerunning Titan among the many who today populate our empty-celebrity world.

She believed she had a talent for singing... and, by God, she was gonna sing, dammit!

And did. Boy-oh-boy, did she. She even rented Carnagie Hall (at her own expense) for her public performances, which were all the rage during her "career" as the… Continue

Radio Interviews, Hot Holiday Reading and New Inspector Horton Marine Mystery Police Procedural

I had to re-record my interview with Rob Richardson of Express FM last week because a technical hitch unfortunately meant the original interview could not be transmitted. I didn't mind though. It's always good fun talking to Rob Richardson who also runs a very lively writing group and web site called Write Invite, which has some very exciting and rather unusual short story writing…

Meeting Writers

Which living writers would you most like to sit down for an hour with and why?

I'll start.

Margaret Atwood - She's just so brilliant.

Ariana Franklin - We'd have lots to discuss.

Sara Paretsky - What she's done in this business!

It isn't by design that they're all women. I'm sure there are lots of male writers

who would provide a fascinating interview as well. And my list might change

tomorrow.

Always Bring Gum to a Food Fight

Andy Belmas is a writer in the Stevens Point area who was looking to interview a book author for his college class. Or master's class. At any rate, he seems to be a student of something somewhere. I wound up talking with Andy yesterday about "Cleansing Eden."

We ate lunch and chatted about writing "Cleansing Eden." I did my best to explain things between bites of a bacon, cream cheese and green chile (BCCGC) sandwich. Don't knock those flavors until you try them, but definitely… Continue

Cameron Hughes interviewed me for the Rap Sheet last March in Kona, Hawaii. I was attending the Left Coast Crime Conference. Film maker Tito Haggardt produced and edited the video.
