Crime author, Pauline Rowson celebrates the crime genre for National Crime Writing Week

National Crime Writing Week kicks off today in the UK and runs until June 19, 2011. This  doesn't mean that everyone should start writing crime fiction and neither does it mean that us crime writers will be furiously scribbling away during the week to meet some magical target, or because it's the only week of the year when we can write. No, the purpose of National Crime Writing Week is to celebrate the crime genre and to encourage those who wouldn't normally read a… Continue

Time frames in novels, and particularly when writing a crime series, are a tricky thing.  There is 'real time' and then there is 'fictional time'.  In 'real time’ I write one DI Horton a year whereas in ‘fictional time’ the novels are currently set over a period of a year.

Tide of Death,…

When we hear the word “psychopath” we envision a creepy, murdering monster, but…

Farewell to Manual Typewriters

In addition to books from my childhood, the reluctant typewriter in the basement of my family home drew me to writing. The gummy keys stuck, forcing me to use several fingers and a hearty jab to generate each key stroke. I worked long hours to create something that looked like the “real” writing I saw in books.

Apparently typewriters continued to be viewed as useful machines in India until…

Planning And Structuring A Crime Novel

I've started planning the next DI Andy Horton marine mystery crime novel, number eight in the series, which is set against the backdrop of the sea on the South Coast of England. How much planning is required when structuring a crime novel?

The answer to that question varies with the author.  Some crime writers spend a very long time at the planning stage, up to a…

Looking back at my notes I see that it took me ten months to write.  I started it on 12 June 2010. I would like to have written it in nine months and my…

On the Road Again

On the Road Again

In my dreams, a week dances tantalizingly just over the horizon. This week is filled with nothing. No appointments, no road trips, no phone calls. In my dream, I work at one of my three computers (the sitting down at the desk one, the standing up when my back is tired one, and the go-anywhere laptop one) all day, every day, and at the end of the…
