Marketing for (Beginning) Writers

Your book's been accepted. How wonderful! Congratulations.

It's a terrific, feeling, isn't it, after all those rejections? But now comes the real work. What? You thought you'd done the work and that now came the pleasure? Ha! Think again. Writing the book's only half of it. And if you're a techno-thickie, like me, you'll be amazed at what you can learn to do; I certainly was.

Everyone knows about the signings and the crowds of people who come to each. But…

Mystery at Comic Con

Lots of crime writing related activities at Wizard World Comic Con in Rosemont, Illinois over the weekend. Was treated royally by Jon Jordan and the folks in the Crime Spree Magazine area. They are always promoting writers and fun, too. I was hoping to see Raymond Benson's smiling face, but unfortunately only got to see his posterior side as he disappeared into the crushing throng. Giving chase was futile, blocked as I was by storm troopers and autograph hounds alike. Back at the booth, it was… Continue

It's shaping up to be a busy 2010

2010 is already shaping up to be a busy year with lots of writing activity, talks and book signings to look forward to. Here is the line up for the first six months of the year as it stands at the moment. There is a new Calendar of Events page on my official web site and all my events, book signings and publications will be posted there throughout the year, as well as here.

On 27 January I start the year… Continue

Cornwall and CrimeFest

I’ve just returned from giving two talks in Cornwall where the sun was shining, the sea was blue and the crowds were flocking to St Ives, which was my first port of call on Tuesday morning at 11am. I met some delightful people as always and my heartfelt thanks to them for listening to me talking about how I write and for buying my books. After a quick sandwich lunch sitting in the cemetery overlooking the bay it was about an hour’s drive to St Austell… Continue

A busy year ahead

2009 promises to be a busy year for me with seven of my books being published and some talks and events already lined up. But first, as it is the New Year, it's a good time to reflect on what has gone before and then to set objectives and look forward to events in 2009. So here goes:

Looking back at 2008

In Cold Daylight, my thriller featuring Adam Greene, reached the top ten shortlist for the World Book Day Prize 2008 and came sixth in an on line… Continue

An unusual book signing location- Colonial Bank, Ft. Lauderdale, Florida

I just finished three book signings in less than four weeks and I learned a lot about the buying public, readers, and how the current economic crisis is affecting book sales.

But first, let me tell you about meeting Patti Stegal, (see photo) the daughter of my friend Sue Harrison. Patti was in town from Illinois, where she’s a teacher. Sue bought her a copy of “Chasin’ the Wind” when it first came out, as a gift and after… Continue

It's been book signing week

It's been book signing week with Hythe Library on Tuesday, the Plessey Retirement Association yesterday, and today I've been in my local bookshop, The Hayling Island Bookshop, to do another signing on the publication of my marine mystery, Deadly Waters. It went really well and I was delighted to meet up with so many of my readers and meet new ones. Being on home ground it's a more relaxing signing than on strange ground where you're always wondering if anyone will turn up.

There was… Continue

Signings--From the sublime to the ridiculous

"Sublime" is a bit of an exaggeration. "Ridiculous" is not. I had two signings last month that were a study in contrasts.

The first was for the Eugene Symphony Guild. I was invited to be the speaker at one of their fund-raising dinners in a member's home. A couple of dozen people paid $30 apiece to hear me babble for an hour or so before they got their dinners. And 10 guild members dashed around producing and serving and clearing up the dinners. Apparently something went wrong with… Continue
