Planning And Structuring A Crime Novel

I've started planning the next DI Andy Horton marine mystery crime novel, number eight in the series, which is set against the backdrop of the sea on the South Coast of England. How much planning is required when structuring a crime novel?

The answer to that question varies with the author.  Some crime writers spend a very long time at the planning stage, up to a…

Finished DI Andy Horton Crime Novel last night and sent it to my editor

Last night I finished the final edits on the DI Andy Horton crime novel, number seven in the series, and pressed the send button. Yes, it's whizzed its way to my editor and will pop into his e mail this morning.

Looking back at my notes I see that it took me ten months to write.  I started it on 12 June 2010. I would like to have written it in nine months and my…

Interesting opportunity for writers

Author Stacy Juba has a very cool question to ask writers: What were you doing 25 years ago today? Or, more intriguing yet, what was one of your characters doing 25 years ago?

My answer appears today http://stacyjuba.com/blog/2010/07/28/25-years-ago-today-well-known-writer-and-blogger-jenny-milchman/

Back from my appearance at Crimefest 2010

A boiling hot day in England (the first of the year) and being closeted inside a stuffy Marriott Hotel in Bristol was not the best place to be. But Crimefest, an international convention of crime writers and crime fiction fans, beckoned on 21 May 2010 and I was delighted to be asked to appear on a panel with other crime writers to talk about my crime novels and answer questions from the delegates.

I met my fellow crime writers; J.D. Goodhind, Neil White, Linda Regan…

Stealing the novel, really

Every couple of days a little alert pops up in my email account letting me know that I can read my books for nothing in Norwegian. My Norwegian’s not so great and I can read my books for nothing any time. But that’s not the point.

Scandinavia is a major center of so-called Cyberpunks who have willfully misinterpreted an old hacker adage that “information wants to be free” to mean “go ahead and steal things from which someone else expects to earn his livelihood.” Such Cyber… Continue

My voice and his voice: first- or third-person narrative in the novel

Robert Harris has been one of my favorite authors since I first laid hands on “Fatherland,” his “what if the Nazis had won” thriller. “Enigma” and “Archangel” were even better. His first two Roman ventures “Pompei” and “Imperium” were by no means the worst books I read in the years of their publication.

Then came “The Ghost.” The story of a hack hired to ghostwrite the multi-million-dollar memoirs of a former British Prime Minister — transparently Tony…

Writer's Prescription: Butt in Chair

You have an idea. Maybe you have the first three chapters done. But somehow, the rest isn't coming. Is it writer's block? Is it bad plotting? Will it ever become a novel?

Experts everywhere have one answer: butt in chair. You have to write. You have to sit there. You have to keep at it. Will it be good? Maybe, maybe not. But you can't fix it if it isn't there.

Write a whole story. Once you're written "The End", then you can worry about whether it's good or not and…

A reader's review of CROSSROADS by Steven Nedelton

“An exciting new book is out, Crossroads by Steven Nedelton. I recommend it highly, in fact I bought it. It is a mind bending thriller that deals with espionage, murder, revenge and mayhem. If you have ever ridden on a roller coaster, you had better keep your hands in the car with this one. This will keep you on the edge of your seat but at times there is NO edge. Mind control takes over leaving you grasping and gasping at this Ian Holm style story. It is, however, much more than that. You… Continue
