Perhaps I should explain why this page suddenly has a San Francisco theme, even though I actually live in Seattle, Washington.
Partly, it's because I am
a longtime fan of what newspaper columnist
Herb Caen called "Baghdad by the Bay." But it is also because I've just embarked on the writing of a photo history of San Francisco. This will be my
second book about that crazy, wonderful town; the first was
San Francisco, You're History!, a collection of historical essays about the city that was published by Sasquatch Books in 1995.
It's more than likely that my work on this new non-fiction book (which is supposed to be completed by February of next year) will reduce the amount of time I have to spend blogging at
The Rap Sheet and laboring over my first novel. But at least it's not a year-long commitment, and it gives me more excuses to delve into San Francisco's captivating, bawdy past. Not a bad thing, from my point of view.
This Crimespace page's theme, then, reflects where my mind--if not my body--must spend much of its time in the near future.
I'll let you know more about the photo book as it progresses.
