A Boston Mystery Writer Introduces Herself

Hello, fellow Crimespace denizens. Now that I've had a look around, I thought I'd follow up with a proper introduction.

I'm a 50-something mystery (and fantasy) writer living in the Boston, Massachusetts area. I'm Polish-American and live in the comfy suburb of Arlington, MA with my husband. No kids or pets, although a friend of mine sent me a stuffed cat once, so I left it out on the back of the couch for when the nephews stop by. These days I make my living as a freelance web and social media consultant. It's not the most predictable income stream, but new economic realities keep me at it. Besides, I'm an entrepreneurial type and like the control it brings.

I've been writing a mystery series set in the Boston area for a few years now. They feature two baby boomer protagonists, one a Polish-American web consultant (gee, where'd I get that idea?) and a rather outrageous blind woman who shares her office suite in Cambridge, MA, not far from Harvard University. I know the blind woman, too, and she's just as zany as in the books.

My two protagonists, Maggie Szczep and Della Peterson, seem to walk into mysteries at every turn. They approach and solve them in their own, unique ways. I like the series for its exploration of "sight" and "insight," and how perception is influenced by our senses. Neither woman would call herself a "detective." They just use their hard-won common sense and reason to track down the clues, in the meantime looking at life in all its hard and soft manifestations.

I hope you'll bear with me as I drag my characters into the limelight and get the second novel in the series off the ground and into print. I self-published the first novel a few years ago, but have been struggling with the second. I think I just have to stick it out.

Thanks for being here! I'm looking forward to further conversations about writing, reading and publishing.

Hi Margy,

I'm Ronald, pleased to meet you.

I also write mystery and I'm also self published. You're right, just stick to it. I put out a novel in June of last year and have another set to release in Sept of this year. You'll do fine just takes a while to find your core Readers. Where can I pick up a copy of your novel? And I don't see the name of it but it sounds inteteresting.

I wish you much success with your writing,

RSB

Hi Margy,

I hope that was a stuffed toy cat, not a real one. Your book sounds interesting and fun. Keep going with the second in your series.

Hi

Welcome.  We have active Sisters In Crime and MWA chapters in New England.  Have you been to Crime Bake?  My first novel came out in November, I write crime, not mystery though.  Hope to see you around!
