Early Endorsements for “A Circle of Souls”

Linda Fairstein, NYT Bestselling Author: "A fascinating debut - this novel takes the reader to the darkest places in the human soul, from a writer with the authenticity to lead us there. A stunning thriller and an important read."

Judge Judy Sheindlin, star of the Judge Judy Show: "The seminal work of this fine author kept me glued to my chair until the adventure was over and the mystery solved. A great read!"

Book Synopsis:

The sleepy town of Newbury, Connecticut, is shocked when a little girl is found brutally murdered. The town s top detective, perplexed by a complete lack of leads, calls in FBI agent Leia Bines, an expert in cases involving children.

Meanwhile, Dr. Peter Gram, a psychiatrist at Newbury s hospital, searches desperately for the cause of seven-year-old Naya Hastings devastating nightmares. Afraid that she might hurt herself in the midst of a torturous episode, Naya s parents have turned to the bright young doctor as their only hope.

The situations confronting Leia and Peter converge when Naya begins drawing chilling images of murder after being bombarded by the disturbing images in her dreams. Amazingly, her sketches are the only clues to the crime that has panicked Newbury residents. Against her better judgment, Leia explores the clues in Naya s crude drawings, only to set off an alarming chain of events.
In this stunning psychological thriller, innocence gives way to evil, and trust lies forgotten in a web of deceit, fear, and murder.

As my dear mother always says, "If you don't have something nice to say..." I think you're absolutely right that some reviewers feel that success needs to be brought down a few pegs. That is unfortunate, because if they really thought about it everyone benefits from books being published whether they are successful or not. I hold to the hope that there will always be a strong community of readers. Why diminish that? Why discourage someone from picking up a book? Reading tastes are so tremendously personal and subjective anyway. I think that's what Tess was trying to get at. They really are our "babies" and doggone it, it hurts when they're criticized. When I was teaching, I would never, ever think of berating a student, even the most trying of students, in front of a parent. We would always try and couch the conference with positives and strengths while gently pointing out areas that could be improved upon. Same rules apply to books and authors in my mind...

I agree about the value. I'd read Tess's blog and emailed her after the one post. Today, I read a scathing review of the latest book by an author I really like. And I found myself thinking, 'This is what it can come to.' But in some cases, it feels like reviewers decide that an author has had too much success and needs to be taken down a peg or two. Unfortunately, those reviews are just mean. It's hard to separate yourself from it all...we're only human after all, and our characters are like our children. Nobody wants to hear that people think their creations are stupid.
