Alpha is Here!

I know it seems as if I’m changing my blog schedule weekly. What I list as topics for the next week’s blog doesn’t always appear. I’ve delayed some things or postponed topics because of mitigating circumstances. My topics get pushed aside for author interviews because I want to do my part to promote others.

Part of the problem has been I’ve been…

The Femme Fatale and the Bad Boy are Sister and Brother

You've met her.  Maybe not in person, but she appears in almost every James M. Cain and Raymond Chandler novel.  Pulp fiction would have never gained an audience without her.  She appears in movies and in novels of all types today.  The femme fatale -- the sexy, seductive woman who leads men to destruction.

Women wonder why men are so stupid they can't recognize her for what she really is.

You've met him.  Maybe not in fiction,…

Doonan's intense American Caliphate!

Years ago, I dropped out of a Ph.D. program in literature at UCR for a number of reasons. I was working towards a dissertation on Rex Stout, but I realized that this wasn’t the world for me. I can’t remember why I thought I should get a Ph.D. in the first place. I already had an MFA in fiction. Maybe it had something to do with wanting to get a job.
Anyway, I do remember why I dropped out. There were about ten reasons, but one of them was that I love literature. But as much as I…

It takes a village

For the past few weeks, whenever I had the chance, I've been working on a book trailer for my mystery novel, Mixed Messages, and I've finally completed it.

I'd never done a trailer before and, let me tell you, creating it was both frustrating and fun. I can laugh now when I think about how many times my…

New Author Interview

I was interviewed by three different online outlets, with very different results. The long interview posted on Hub Pages tells you a lot about me as a writer, and my most recent projects.

Group Dynamics

This is going to sound quaint or trite or maudlin or something, but sometimes it shocks me how much talent there is in my little part of the world. I suppose that talent exists many places, but I see it all the time in my students and my friends. Someone writes a poem and I see the world in a new and shocking way, and I see new stylistic writing choices as well. It all changes my writing for the better more so than any other kind of reading.

            I’m a zealot when…
