"Call things by their right names…Glass of brandy and water! That is the current but not the appropriate name: ask for a glass of liquid fire and distilled damnation."-- Robert Hall (1764–1831)

I've been distilling damnation for a while now. But never have I gotten myself in so much of a muddle when it has come to names. And not even my character's names. That's easy. Always has been. No, the name I'm having trouble with is my own! Right now, "Jeri Westerson" is the brand name for my medieval noir series (see http://www.jeriwesterson.typepad.com). But I am also writing a contemporary series with a gay amateur sleuth (see http://www.skylerfoxemysteries.typepad.com) and I'm damned if I know what to call myself.

Currently, I've settled uneasily with the moniker "Josh Tyler" for now, thinking that a male name was a better marketing strategy. But on having discussions with others, perhaps I should be using initials. Then, talking about it with some gay friends, they don't see the problem with a female name, so now I might used a female moniker (I don't like my middle name. Louise. *shudder* It never fit me.)

What do you think? Have you had similar conundrums with pen names? Do they vex you, keep you up at night, harry you through the day? (Hmm. Harry Day?) Thoughts?
