While I haven't read Slaughter, I do find that many of these current thrillers rely on gore and shock value rather than story-telling. Fortunately, the "read the first chapter" choice has saved me some Kindle money.
Ah, yes. That's advisable. Also, the first time for any author it's best to get the book at the library.
I'm taking a break from all the mystery, mayhem & murder of crime fiction, reading a EUREKA media tie-in novel called SUBSTITUTION METHOD. I just love this show.

Fatal Destiny - a Grace deHaviland novel
Just finished Zoe Sharp's COLD DROP. This is something of a page turner starring a young woman body guard who runs with her teenage charge from a host of brutal killers. The body count gets very high. It's refreshingly free of the usual feminist claptrap, but ends up with so many confrontations that it reads a bit like the "Perils of Pauline."
I've just started Denise Mina's End of the Wasp Season.
Death in the Fast Lane by Chris Jay Becker
Finished last night Tom Piccirilli's THE COLD SPOT. Excellent, dark, very noirish, very touching and humane, with lots of action and violence. Highly recommended.
I finished reading "Behind the Redwood Door" by John M. Daniel and it was fantastic! Last night, I started reading "Dumpster Dying" by Lesley A. Diehl and I'm already hooked!
THE NIGHT ETERNAL, book 3 in the Strain Trilogy by Guillermo Del Toro & Chuck Hogan. If you liked Stephen King's THE STAND, and/or THE PASSAGE by Justin Cronin, you will love this trilogy.

Steve Hamilton, MISERY BAY. It's called a thriller and features a former police officer, now private eye, working with a police chief to solve a series of puzzling suicides and murders. The book is good, better that your average thriller.
