JD,
I'm having browser problems and can't accept the invitaions everyone's sending me right now. It'd been driving me nuts since I joined up. I'll respond as soon as I update this fossi;.
Thanks,
Deb
Thanks for adding me. I see that you, too, have a picture up of Ken Bruen, sitting in (of all places) A BAR. I think I'm seeing a theme develop here...
Great photo! Looks like you're running for office! I sure hope so. It's either you or Gore and Florida spindled, mutilated, and hung (not well) my vote the last time. Looks like he's only running for the Nobel Prize this time. So please tell me you're running! I'll vote for you!
Pat: I may have to do that. After all, as the man said, "how hard can it be?"
Carol: two factors:
1) That was the book that seemed to want to be written;
2) Of the two proposals I sent (one a Keller novel, one a standalone), that's the one that St. Martin's bought.
Well, JD, I finished The Devil's Right Hand yesterday, and a damn fine read it was too - ta, chuck. Books have made me feel many things while I've been reading them. This one is the first to make me bloody glad I'm a veggie! Why's that? Jack Keller and his dreams... charred and peeling skin, cooked gobbets (great word!) of flesh clinging to bones - bloody hell, lad! I'll be having flashbacks when I'm barbecuing for the omnivores this summer!
I suppose that having a story you want to write would trump writing a story to have to write, such as the next in the series. Good luck with Breaking Cover.
Dusty! Dusty! Dusty! Sorry - couldn't resist copying my buds Fran and Patricia. :) I see we have many favorite authors in common. This doesn't surprise me since I enjoyed The Devil's Right Hand. Yeah, I figure saying Miss Marple and assault rifles is the best way to alienate all camps of mystery readers at once. :) Being contrary has its drawbacks. :) Nice to see you here!
Hi, J.D., and thanks for the invite! We like a lot of the same stuff. I also loved your "Great Caesar's Ghost!" exclamation ... a phrase popularized by that great editor of the Daily Planet, Perry White! Now, if ITW decides to add an award for comic book trivia, I might stand a chance! ;)
merci mille fois for the invite....now to your website and to find out about your books....When I entered college, I took a two-hour bus trip on the New Orleans transit line from St. Bernard Parish. I hated trigonometry, so I usually ended up at the downtown public library and later headed to Jackson Square for a couple of Jax brews. That public library was my sanctuary. After Katrina, I decided to write THE book, start The Beatitudes Network, and donate all royalties to the New Orleans Public Library Foundation to help rebuild the libraries. I give you and NOLA The Beatitudes…
Nice to meet you. Although didn't we bump into each other at T'fest? Just found out I'll be going to VA Festival of the Book next year. Since I read about your panel experience there..got any tips for newbies?
Ro
Rosemary: VaBook is a great conference. They'll give you all the tips you need. Only thing I could add is get out of the hotel for a bit and check out the awesome pedestrian mall next door.
Jeff, Carole, Lyn, Bill, Kelli, Rhonda : You're welcome. Good to see y'all.
Mary: thanks! Glad you liked it. There's more, you know :-).
Mr Rhoades, consider me humbled that an illustrious scribe such as yourself should deign to fraternise with a scruffy hack like myself ... much obliged for the invite, sir. Why not trundle on over to Crime Always Pays and do a Q&A for us, we'll plug whatever book you want us to ... Cheers, Dec
Hey JD - Thanks for inviting me to be on your list - you spoke at our Sisters in Crime group in Greenville, South Carolina last year. I think you are supposed to come back this year but I may be mistaken.
Looking forward to seeing what you have in store for us this go round - E :)
LOL Thanks! My avi is a sketch of Ramona Quimby from the Beverly Cleary books I adored when I was a kid. (I secretly still adore them...don't tell anyone.) ;)
Thank you for e-vite. I swear I've seen your name in about a dozen author blogs, your peers speak very highly of you! If you dug "Hard Boiled," you should check out one of Woo's disciples, Ringo Lam. His best is "Full Contact" and is as close as most Honk Kong flicks come to a complete script.
Just wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed the murderati contest! Have The Devil's Hand at home to read (actually bought it after 'running into you' at TLC) this weekend (even though I'm also writing...). Those 'quotes' would make a great book by themselves.
Hi Dusty, thanks for visiting my page and the kind words about Secondhand Smoke! (I've been on vacation and out of the loop, which is why I'm so tardy in responding!) I've got your new book in my TBR pile; can't wait!
J.D.
In a first novel I made the mistake of having the Chicago River flow the way most rivers flow, into larger lower bodies of water. Good guess, no? But it's wrong. Engineers have reversed the flow so that Chicago's sewage doesn't flow right into its fresh water intake. It was a small error but from then on I wanted to get everything right, even if the story could get along well with faking it. Even one of Ray Bradbury's short stories had the moons of Mars revolving the wrong way around the parent planet, and if you notice things like this, it's jarring.
