Then, by all means, please stop

Writing novels is no fun; nor is, generally speaking, reading novels. Reading people writing about novels is not always fun, either, because relatively little of this kind of writing is any good. Then there’s the group of people who don’t enjoy being novelists, to which I probably belong; whose lives are at once shaped and [...]

Hometown:
Hee-Haw salutes my hometown, Urbana, Ill., population 38,463. SAL-OOT!
About Me:
I'm a writer living in Denver. Eager for my first sale of anything at any length, I've been plugging away at short stories while I outline a novel.

My dad was a cop for 26 years, so I glom a lot of ideas and inspiration from him. That many years provides lots of stories. He's my hero. My mom reads three or four paperback thrillers a week. She's my first reader and what she says goes. Usually.

I have a day job... I write software manuals. In other words, I write books nobody---and I do mean nobody---ever reads.

Books And Authors I Like:
Off the top of my head in ninety seconds:

THE WASTE LANDS, WATERSHIP DOWN, the Matt Helm series, SKINNY LEGS AND ALL, A PRAYER FOR OWEN MEANY, Max Allan Collins's non-tie in stuff, Greg Iles, 50's and 60's pulp stuff, David Dodge, Michael Connelly, Anita Shreve, Ed McBain, Ken Follett, the Hard Case Crime imprint, Stephen White...
Movies And TV Shows I Like:
I don't watch a lot of TV, except for LOST, stupid AMERICAN IDOL, and UFC stuff on Spike.

I do watch as many movies as I can...

What's in the box... ?

Hemingway revealed as failed KGB spy

http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/2009/jul/09/hemingway-failed-kgb-spy

From the article:

"Its section on the author's secret life as a "dilettante spy" draws on his KGB file in saying he was recruited in 1941 before making a trip to China, given the cover name "Argo", and "repeatedly expressed his desire and willingness to help us" when he met Soviet agents in Havana and London in the 40s. Kindle 2 Price Plunge Signals E-Book Reader Market Competition

http://www.pcworld.com/article/168098/kindle_2_price_plunge_signals_ebook_reader_market_competition.html

From the article:

"The bigger question remains, Is there a market here worth expanding? A dedicated e-book reader may enjoy a niche audience, but the question remains whether a separate device for reading digital books will be viable in the long term. AContinue

The Short Story: Part II

Yesterday I wrote about what writing short stories does for a writer's style. Today I'll focus on what it does for her career.

The word is EXPOSURE. I've written short stories in a dozen different places, and each one brings my name before readers. Readers can't decide they like your work until they hear of you. Hardly anyone goes into a bookstore and says, "I think I'll look for a book by someone I've never heard of."

So I put a short story on my website. I submitted some stories to ezines li… Continue

The Agent Hunt Goes On

I restarted my agent hunt after a bout of what was possibly swine flu, and started sending out query letters to potentially interested agents.

I got 1 rejection so far, and like past rejections was sent in about the time it took for the assistant to hit the "reply" button, so it was pretty obvious that the materials they asked for probably weren't even read, so I now I know where not to try again.

Anyway, the hunt goes on.

Hi,
Thanks for having my book on your TBR list. It's nothing like the book coming out this year, but I think it holds it's own. Let me knw what you think.

Hey thanks... For me it was a toss up between SLAA and FIERCE INVALIDS. Who needs drugs when there's Tom Robbins?

Hi, Rob & welcome to Crimespace! Can't tell you how cool it is to see SKINNY LEGS AND ALL on your list - it's always been a toss up for me between that one and JITTERBUG PERFUME. A little Tom Robbins is a great balance to the darker stuff.
