The other replies have given you a good picture. Remember, all these reports have spaces for identifying the victim(s), the property, the time, date, location, and finally the type of incident. It could be a crime or a domestic argument. Our repor...

Lee Lofland is a member here, I think. He runs a website and blog about police procedure. He's answered every question I've had for him.

Oh My Gosh, Jessica! If you haven't read any of McBain's 87th Precinct series, especially the early ones, you're in for a hell of a treat! There's a large number of them. But you'll enjoy everyone.

I'm not familiar with him, but I'll try the library

Thank you very much for the insider knowledge!

Find books by Ed McBain on his 87th Precinct series. In the early books he actually put in New York City police forms (changing a few things, etc.,) I'm fairly sure they were NYC forms.

Jess, I had been a municiple police officer for about 14 years in South Central Pennsylvania. These reports vary from state to state, even department to department. But generally they cover the same information. In my department, there was sever...

Too bad you can't rejuvenate to the time of your picture (I know, right now you're thinking: look who's talking). But if you could, you'd be snatched up for the next Harry Potter flick.

No, I don't have an agent, Jessica. I figure I'll tackle that once I actually finish my novel. :)

Hi Jessica,

Glad you enjoyed The Twelfth Card. You might like to try 'The Coffin Dancer', another of Deaver's best as far as I'm concerned.

Have a great day.

Best regards

Jessica,

As you enoyed The Bonwe Collector I'm sure you'll REALLY enjoy The Twelfth Card, also by Jeff Deaver. It's absolutely brilliant! (Lincoln Rhyme features again).

Best regards

Journalism is a great starter career for writing crime fiction. I hardly ever have to make up anything, I just cull through my memory of old stories I covered and ones I couldn't cover but can now fictionalize.
Welcome.

First Draft

I'VE FINISHED MY FIRST DRAFT!!!

I'm pleased with how it turned out actually. I'll need to use the rewrites to flesh out the characters and sneak in a few more red herrings, but on the whole I am rather pleased!

So, keeping in the Stephen King tradition, I shall allow the manuscript to ferment. Like leaving a pie on the window sill to cool. Yum... I like pie!

OK - focus. Now that's finished, I need to take my mind off the draft and think about something else so when I come… Continue

My USB corrupted and I lost half a chapter before I could fix it. I'm pretty upset about it, because that was half a night's work!!! Grrrr...

I can never concentrate on writing unless I have some background noise - I like to put a period drama DVD on and listen to it. It reminds me of the kind of language and tone I'm to avoid at all costs!

I found a book on forensics at Dymocks which I bought and devoured. It's an excellent source! All those random little tidbits... they just add a touch of a… Continue

Musings

I've planned out my novel several times in lots of new and exciting ways. Things always change every time I do it - minor characters, Red Herrings, important plot points - nothing is safe when Jessie decides it's time to rethink her strategy!!!

And I often do. Most often because I think of something way way better; generally out of necessity because I don't want all my friends to laugh at me when I offer them my story to read. I bought a book the other day - How to Write Crime Fiction - v. inte… Continue

Hello All!

I have always had an almost overpowering facination with language and the written word. I love immersing myself in language styles and form, developing my talents in different genres and creative avenues. I have dabbled in Fantasy and Short Story writing and during the HSC I received top marks in EXT2 English for my 8000 word short story, Blood Lines.

Now, I'm turning my attention to Crime Fiction. After studying it for two years in EXT1 English, it is a natural choice. I intend to write a nove… Continue
