So many to list! I average about 50 books and 300 short stories a year. I mainly read mystery and horror. Favorite authors include: Dennis Lehane, Neil Gaiman, Daniel Woodrell, Carl Hiaasen, Dashiell Hammett, Joe R. Lansdale, Jim Thompson, Elmore Leonard, Charles Bukowski, Harlan Ellison, Walter Mosley, David Goodis, F. Paul Wilson, John Steinbeck, James Lee Burke, Stephen King, James M. Cain, Bentley Little, Lawrence Block and Donald Westlake (under any name).
Movies And TV Shows I Like:
Again, so many to list! I average about 250 movies a year and they include a bit of everything. I love film noir, horror and the Marx Brothers. Favorites include: Duck Soup, Escape From New York, The Maltese Falcon, Basket Case, True Romance, Bringing Up Baby, Bride of Frankenstein, King Kong, Wings of Desire, Hannah and Her Sisters, Out of the Past, An American Werewolf in London, Jaws, Creepshow, Freaks, Barton Fink, The Thin Man Series, The Bob Hope/Bing Crosby Road Series and a lot of stuff on Turner Classic Movies. As for TV, I try to catch "30 Rock" when it's on, but otherwise I watch stuff when it comes out on DVD. In the past there's been "Buffy," "Angel," "Veronica Mars," "Cheers" and "The X Files." And through it all "The Simpsons," "The Twilight Zone" and Wrestling.

Another New Noir Fest

Another New Noir Fest.



Once again I had far too many movies piled up on both the DVR and my “To Be Watched” Shelves and a lot of those were film noirs that I’d never seen. Combine that with The Film Noir Foundation bringing their Noir City Film Festival back to Chicago and… time for a three-week marathon.

Robert B. Parker R.I.P.

Mystery writer Robert B. Parker died yesterday at the age of 77. He was just “sitting at his desk.” Not a bad way to go for a writer that put out 3 books a year, who wrote 5 to 10 pages a day.



He was one of the great ones, one of those writers that gave the private-eye novel several standards that we take for granted now (the dangerous, possible psycho sidekick ala Hawk comes to mind). And if he didn’t invent a new element, he certainly made it popular.
