About Me:
I published my first novel, a mystery titled Too Near the Edge in October 2006, and it won a Silver Medal in the 2007 Independent Publisher (IPPY) Book Awards which honor the year’s best independently published books. My book ranked second in the Best Regional Fiction—West-Mountain category. I call Too Near the Edge a character-driven mystery with a paranormal twist and a humorous tone. In the story the protagonist, Cleo Sims, a 37-year-old grief therapist who has accidentally discovered a process through which people can make contact with dead loved ones, helps a young widow discover who pushed her husband off the edge of the Grand Canyon.
Winning the IPPY award is very exciting for me because writing fiction is a new direction in my life. I've spent a lot of years doing research and teaching at universities and working as a social worker in hospitals, hospice, and as a long-term-care ombudsman. Along the way, I did a lot of writing--published two nonfiction books and a bunch of articles, manuals and national newsletters.
But I always had a craving to write fiction, especially mysteries, which I've been hooked on as a reader since I started with Nancy Drew at a very young age. So my mystery novel was in there, working quietly in the background, biding its time until it finally came to the top of my to-do list. The result is Too Near the Edge, which gave life to Cleo, a Boulder-based grief therapist whose ability to contact dead people gets her involved in solving a murder; and Tyler, a dead surfer dude who gives Cleo cryptic and often inscrutable advice.

Early Endorsements for “A Circle of Souls”

Linda Fairstein, NYT Bestselling Author: "A fascinating debut - this novel takes the reader to the darkest places in the human soul, from a writer with the authenticity to lead us there. A stunning thriller and an important read."

Judge Judy Sheindlin, star of the Judge Judy Show: "The seminal work of this fine author kept me glued to my chair until the adventure was over and the mystery solved. A great read!"

Book Synopsis:

The sleepy town of Newbury, Connecticut, is shocked when a little girl is found brutally murdered. The town s top detective, perplexed by a complete lack of leads, calls in FBI agent Leia Bines, an expert in cases involving children.

Meanwhile, Dr. Peter Gram, a psychiatrist at Newbury s hospital, searches desperately for the cause of seven-year-old Naya Hastings devastating nightmares. Afraid that she might hurt herself in the midst of a torturous episode, Naya s parents have turned to the bright young doctor as their only hope.

The situations confronting Leia and Peter converge when Naya begins drawing chilling images of murder after being bombarded by the disturbing images in her dreams. Amazingly, her sketches are the only clues to the crime that has panicked Newbury residents. Against her better judgment, Leia explores the clues in Naya s crude drawings, only to set off an alarming chain of events.
In this stunning psychological thriller, innocence gives way to evil, and trust lies forgotten in a web of deceit, fear, and murder.

Is the pic on your book cover from the Grand Canyon? If so, you might be interested to know that recently discovered sediments added another couple of million years to its age. My fear is that in a throw-away constantly warming world, its future will be the world's most voluminous high-tech garbage dump.

Regards and welcome from a fellow Coloradoan.

Antler Dust features a female guide in the Flat Tops Wilderness of western Colorado and a tangle between hunters and animal rights protesters.

Great reviews from The Denver Post, Aspen Times, Great Falls (Montana) Tribune and five stars on Amazon.

Just thought I'd pass that along...

Cheers,

Mark
