HOPE AND A HANDFUL OF CHANGE

Last year mustered in a new president, a sad economy, and plenty of unemployed people.

As a writer, I'm self-employed and living creatively close to the poverty line. The idealistic days of soulful writers in Parisian garrets, swigging cheap wine and pounding out the Great American Novel are gone with Hemingway and Fitzgerald.

Modern writers once worried people would stop reading altogether. The success of Harry Potter defied that theory. The public willingly paid money for books again, making… Continue

MYSTERY ON THE HIGH SEAS: A CRUISE TO DIE FOR

I've had a little set-back with promotion due to a fractured arm, but here's the update:

The cruise is Nov. 14-21, 2010, sailing from Los Angeles to the Mexican Riviera. We have two days at sea for the conference, which is free. Cabins start at $400, gratuities included. Ports of call are Puerto Vallarta, Mazetlan and Cabo San Lucas. There are conference T-shirts, champagne and $50 in "ship" money, plus an open bar meet & greet.

I've been casting the net for a few high-profile keynote spea… Continue

'TIS THE SEASON?

Six days ago, I was planning Christmas. I put a wreath on the door. I put a pretty flag out to sway in the wind. That's as far as I got. I tripped in my kitchen and took the impact on my left shoulder.

But still, I'm thankful. It could have been much worse. The counter was only inches away from my head. I live alone and don't encourage visitors, so I might have sprawled there indefinitely. My neighbors are not nosy.

Now that I'm able to type with both hands again, I thought I'd make a list of… Continue

DAVID VS GOLIATH

Small publishing vs. BIG PUBLISHING.

Every Author sets out with high hopes of publishing their book and seeing it on the shelves of the big chains. They deserve to be there. After brain-sweat and sacrifice, the reward should be wonderful book signings and lines of buyers waiting for an autograph.

That's the carrot that keeps writers pounding away at the keyboard. It happens to a lucky few. But sometimes the author published by a major publishing house is a one-book wonder and left to contempla… Continue

MURDER ON THE HIGH SEAS: A CRUISE TO DIE FOR

I just returned from a trip to the Mexican Caribbean. It was a cruise saluting Veterans, very patriotic (I am a Vietnam Era vet). I was on a panel of authors talking to the vets about writing their memoirs. The cruise was terrific! We got together later with the travel agent who pulled together the trip and pitched the idea of a mystery cruise. I came up with the title: Murder On the High Seas: A Cruise To Die For.

I heard today that the travel agent can pull it together by next fall. 7 days sa… Continue

OK, this is a waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay late response. But I was very glad to meet you at the PSWA conference last June after seeing you everywhere virtually. Thanks for the kind words about the humor panel. I was scared as it was my first time actually speaking rather than just being moderator or timer. My NY resolution is to get those blogs going about humor writing. It was a tough year but I think my energy level is finally coming back. Cattle Capers #2, The Cheep Brigade Terror, is about 70% completed and I've got some short stories in the works, also, for a collection. Have a Happy Moo Year and thanks for keeping me informed of opportunities out there! You are amazing!

Sunny: Things were so quiet while you were gone! Nice to have you back. I have been following your posts about the cruise and would love to do it. Timing will be the key. Planning would have been better for me for 2011 but really want to do it. Talk to hubby and he is for it if we can swing with $$$. He is losing his job at the end of January and really have to budget wisely until we see if he can get another one quickly. Consequently haven't been able to make a lot of commitments for 2010 but I want to. Lot more info than a simple yes or no you were looking for! We will have to get together soon and tip a couple shots of Tequila with you. That was a favorite in my youth but I warn you, it really reduces inhibitions! Wendy

That sounds SO reasonable! I wonder if there is ANY way to get My Sweet Man on a cruise ship? And what would we do with the "wondercat'? Well, there's still time to plan. PLEASE keep me updated on plans.

Thanks!

I'm often surprised by the choices some writers make, too. But we all see this career differently, and some people are simply unable to see the small press route as legitimate. I sure do - that's been my exclusive domain. Maybe they think it's easier, and therefore, counts less. But when a small company only publishes a few books a year, or even as little as one, they're putting absolutely all their eggs in that basket and the vetting can be intense.

I've known a few writers who, after securing an agent, but not getting a big press deal, immediately self-published, rather than considering small presses. One of them has a garage full of books because she was convinced that as soon as she put it into print, some big press was going to find it --somehow --and offer her a fortune for it. Didn't happen. But then she didn't do any promoting, either. But she wouldn't have if she'd gotten a deal.

Some people are simply unrealistic since, though they pursue publication, at some level they don't actually want it. They simply want to live in their fantasy world of how great it's going to be, how famous they'll become, etc. Those writers who do achieve huge success are still working hard, and that's not part of that golden fantasy.

I know one writer who's never even secured an agent, but she always tells people about the fabulous trip she's going to take once she gets an advance for her book. But, not only are advances usually fairly small, even from big houses, they're paid in stages, and mostly importantly, anyone with any smarts saves that money to plow right back into promoting.

I submit that some writers like sitting on china eggs -- you know, the ones that'll never hatch.
