My eighth novel, THE KEY is now available on amazon and at the discounted price! And I'm doing a giveaway. My sister made me these really cool bookmarks for the launch (that you can see here: http://www.paulinebjones.com/contests.htm and there are more on the way.) So, buy THE KEY, send me proof of purchase and I'll send one to the first responders until they are gone.…

Crosshairs review

I just wanted to share a bit of good news about my suspense novel, CROSSHAIRS. It was reviewed by Stephen Horowitz, Ph.D. of the Peppertree Literary Magazine who said:

"The story is full of twists and turns and loads of suspense. The reader is pulled along at a frenzied pace ... I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good murder mystery."

You know what I really hate?

When Monica Bellucci plays a lactating prostitute and doesn’t show her tits. Or any serious nudity at all for that matter.

Went to a screening of Shoot Em Up last night. Interestingly enough, I was up for the novelization of this movie and didn’t get the gig. Anyone know if a novelization was done at all?

As for the film, it’s exactly what you think. My Hoodtown publisher Keith Rainville and I had a sort of Siskel and Ebert disagreement about it. Keith flat out hated it. I… Continue

Cancer isn't just a zodiac sign

Posted by Jeanne Munn Bracken

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. That statement might seem waaaaay off topic for the Writers Plot, but it's really on target. Because I moved from "some day maybe I'll be a writer" to "I am a published author" as a result of an event that would shake anybody's life to the core.

My toddler daughter was diagnosed with…

Sub-genres

I'm about to start a series of talks at local libraries on mystery sub-genres, and it's led me to some interesting people. I wanted to offer my audiences two authors' work as representative of each sub-genre: one very successful author and one who is just getting started but is promising. Since my reading within the mystery genre as a whole is pretty eclectic, I thought finding enough examples would be easy. I advertised for nominations in the sub-genres I'm less familiar with, meaning to…

Tying up the end of summer in the south of Laos?

When I was asked to review "Anarchy and Old Dogs," the latest Dr. Siri Investigates mystery from Colin Cotterill, I was thrilled. That glow faded a bit once I read the book; it doesn't seem quite as much fun as its three predecessors. That said, it's still better than much out there. And I hope my… Continue

Scribd, SFWA, and Whose Rights are Whose

These days, writers have different ideas about what they want done with their work. Those of us who write for a living tend to want control over how the work is displayed--and so do our publishers. Others of us sometimes want their work freely available, as widely as possible. The nice thing is, we can each make that choice for our own work, and proceed accordingly.

The not-so-nice thing is when others try to make that choice for…

Murder Is Contagious

Okay, fellow mystery writers, confess: Have you begun to see possibilities for murder in everyday situations? Does the idea cross your mind in certain instances that the world might be better off without _____, and you have just the method to accomplish it? Oh, it's only idle thought, and you'd never act on it, but it's the tiniest bit satisfying to realize that if you had to, you could make the world a better place and never get caught, right?

I thought so. Writing about murder…

Romance Suspense

Hello Everyone,

I'm Joe and currently working on a Romance Suspense novel. I've been writing for years, but this is first serious project. Looking forward to the interaction with the many writers on this site. Member in the RWA and it seems to be a very supportive group locally as well.

Any advice for the first time novelist...especially in this genre.

Mother Teresa, or truth is stranger than fiction

Mother Teresa’s rough face, aged with lines and colored from outdoor living, stared from the front of TIME’s Sept. 3, 2007, issue. I half expected to read she had received sainthood from Rome, but large white letters screamed "The Secret Life of Mother Teresa" and small white print whispered "Newly published letters reveal a be loved icon’s 50-year crisis with faith."

Last week, Bill Maher, host of "Real Time with Bill Maher" on HBO, showed off the magazine and even kissed it,…

What's New for September

Hi, everyone. I posted September's WHAT'S NEW at my website http://www.davidmorrell.net. This month, I've written a personal essay about my 6-part comic-book series CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE CHOSEN, which debuts this month. I also have a page of Mitch Breitweiser's amazing artwork. I can't describe how excited I am by this chance to work in a totally new medium and to try to say something meaningful in it.

Here are two interesting articles about…

Ships and Other Big Things At Sea

Attempting to beat the heat - 107 (41.666 celsius) in our neighborhood

yesterday - Eva and I and a couple of friends took to the water. We

drove down to Long Beach, boarded a large catamaran and motored out to

the channel between the mainland and Catalina Island. It was a whole

lot cooler on the water. In spite of which - and a liberal slather of

sunscreen - I got viciously sunburnt.

We did see whales. Blue whales, the biggest animals on Earth. We saw five of… Continue

A New Story Out

Haven't blogged much lately - start of semester, etc - but I do have a brand new story up on Shred of Evidence. Take a look. It's good stuff - based, in part, on a true story AND a darn good use of scurvy in a story. Have fun and leave me a note.

Technology & Crime...

Hello everybody, this is my first entry, and instead of opening with greetings, a presentation, and all that kind of old (and still useful...) crap, i decided to open this page with a poll; I'd like to know what you, readers and writers of crime fiction, think about "technology in the fiction"; I tend to leave technology out of what i write as much as i can, and look at old novels with a sort of nostalgia (writers didn't need to be reticent back… Continue
