Profile Information

Hometown:
Santa Fe, NM
About Me:
I am the author of First Blood, the novel in which Rambo was created. I was born in 1943 in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada. In 1960, at the age of seventeen, I became a fan of the classic television series, Route 66, about two young men in a Corvette traveling the United States in search of America and themselves. The scripts by Stirling Silliphant so impressed me that I decided to become a writer.

Books And Authors I Like:
I went to graduate school becomes of my admiration for Ernest Hemingway. In terms of thrillers, I was inspired by Geoffrey Household’s ROGUE MALE (1939), which is about a British big-game hunter who stalks Hitler on the eve of the Second World War. Household’s WATCHER IN THE SHADOWS is also an inspiration to me. I was a professor of American literature and feel close to the classics: Hawthorne and Melville, Henry James, Edith Wharton, and so on. Thoreau’s WALDEN is a book for all seasons and represents my philosophy. I’m a co-founder of the International Thriller Writers organization and enjoy the work of my fellow board members Gayle Lynds, Steve Berry, Lee Child, David Hewson, James Rollins, MJ Rose, and M. Diane Vogt.
Movies And TV Shows I Like:
The classic TV series ROUTE 66 got me started as a writer because of Stirling Silliphant’s great scripts. These days, I’m addicted to THE UNIT, which has excellent military technical advisers. Also BATTLESTAR GALLACTICA. What an amazingly creative and engaging series.

Hi David,

It's great to see that there's another NM dweller here. Was born and raised in Santa Fe, and with most of my family still there and my weekly visits, it's always amusing to still hear people from out of state wondering if they need a passport to enter. I'm thinking next time, I'm going to answer in the affirmative....

Hi David,

I recently reread FIRST BLOOD and realized why I love it so much. And I agree with you that the latest movie comes closest to the book when it comes to John's character and inner demons.

I wish you were doing the script for the next one. I would love to see where you would take it with John going home and seeing his father.

Best,
Jason

Hi David,
Believe it or not we met through ITW--I know you, but you probably don't know me. My first ITW event was in NY at BEA (the crowded cocktail party0 and you introduced yourself. What a great job you and Gayle have done! See you in July.

My husband and I both enjoy your work, and I especially enjoyed a panel where you, Barry Eisler, and Lee Child got together. Testosterone City, but great fun.
