An Interview at Writers and Authors

I was recently approached by Jo Lindsell of Writers and authors and asked if I'd do an interview about my award-winning novel 'A Study in Red - The Secret Journal of Jack the Ripper' for their blog site. I was happy to do so and the interview is now online at http://writersandauthors.blogspot.com/

I'd love anyone to go along and take a look and perhaps leave a comment there.

Best regards

Scribd's new e-book store: A sea change in publishing?

I was still recovering from Sunday's 4.7 earthquake in LA when I heard the news that must have sent a shiver of apprehension through the publishing industry: Scrbd, the publishing web site that gets around 60 million hits a day, began selling books online. Read rest of…

Picking Up Men...um, Women, er, Characters

Sometimes a character just walks into my life and I think, "He/she has got to be in a book!" Questions arise like "How many times did she dye/perm/heat that hair to fry it that badly?" or "Does she really think everyone else loves that irritating dog as much as she does?" Answers to the questions provide fodder for a secondary character with depth and dimension.

People-watching garners tidbits of human nature that add salt to a story: the man in the restaurant who speaks to the… Continue

May Allah bless such reviewers

America, the National Catholic weekly, includes a great review of The Samaritan's Secret, the third of my Palestinian crime novels, this week. "Rees masterfully concocts another claustrophobic tale from the occupied territories that takes us deep into the Palestinian experience even as it entertains," writes Claire Schaeffer-Duffy. She also calls my detective… Continue

Meet Me in Washington DC tomorrow

Since my last posting here I had my last book signing at the Borders Express in St Charles Town Center before the big book release party for Russian Roulette. Store Manager Becky has done a great job preparing for that event and I talked to people that night who were looking forward to it.

I also signed a few books at the Borders Express in Dulles Town Center Mall. That was supposed to be my final book signing before the new book comes out June 13th. But the best laid… Continue

Rambo Granny of Melbourne, Austrailia

Gun-toting granny Ava Estelle, 81, was so ticked-off when two thugs raped her 18-year-old granddaughter that she tracked the unsuspecting ex-cons down... and shot off their testicles.

The old lady spent a week hunting those men down -and, when she found them, she took revenge on them in her own special way, said Melbourne police investigator Evan Delp. Then she took a taxi to the nearest police station, laid the gun on the sergeant's desk and told him as calm as could be: 'Those… Continue

B-Con 2009

I’m finally officially registered for BoucherCon. I was on the fence, wondering if I could hack it financially, but the Anthony nomination pretty much made the decision for me. No info on panels or anything as of yet but will post when I know more.

See you all there!

CrimeFest - Monday 18th May

I just spent a really enjoyable weekend at CrimeFest in Bristol, a convention for fans of the crime writing genre comprised of panels, interviews, reading groups, writing workshops, dinners, and award presentations. The life of an author can be a pretty solitary one at times, so its always a treat to get out and meet others that are involved/interested in crime writing, as it reminds me that I’m not alone.

This was my first time at CrimeFest and I’ve got nothing but praise for… Continue

Growth without change? I don't think so.... Donna Carrick

There comes a time in every writer's life when he or she must ask: has my work become stagnant? Am I churning out more of the same, or are my ideas still fresh?

It's a tough question -- especially for successful writers. After all, who wants to mess with a good thing? When all the feedback is positive, and the fan base is loyal, like it was for Canadian author Giles Blunt with his Cardinal mystery… Continue

Let Me Tell You About My Weekend

Cold.

There, that's it in a nutshell. From that one word you can picture a line of tiny, transient shops, set up along a lake shore under canopies threatening to fly away (some did); customers staying home or at best hurrying through the rows with no willingness to browse, chat, or buy.

There were good things, of course. I met lots of really nice vendors and got to know them pretty well, since we had only each other to talk to. I had time to cut down that book the… Continue

SEX, THUGS AND ROCK & ROLL is now available

Smack bang in the middle of a fine collection of thuggery related literature is my story, BUDDHA BEHIND BARS. It's my first publishing credit so I'm celebrating by dehydrating a bottle of Johnnie Walker and snorting it off the belly of ... okay, I'm just having a glass of Coke. But still, I'm hoping this will kick my arse on to a chair and force me to write some more.

With an intro… Continue

Anthony Awards, and My Hair

Money Shot has been nominated twice for the 2009 Anthony Award, for Best Paperback Original and also for Best Cover Art. Congrats to all the nominees.

Also in other critical, earthshattering Faust news that I'm sure you all can't live without (assuming you haven't already seen this on Twitter or my "real" blog,) I'm no longer a blonde!

Well no longer just a blonde,… Continue

Beastly Me: What Israel learned from Arafat

Tomorrow's Netanyahu-Obama summit has Iran, Gaza, and settlements on the agenda, but the Israeli leader will bring a new tactic learned from an old nemesis. On The Daily Beast today, my take on how Bibi will "pull an Arafat."

Who You gonna Call? Ghost Writers??

For the next couple of weeks, we'll try to respond to some of the most frequently asked questions, on the theory that if one new author asked, a dozen more want to know the same thing.

Here's a question that comes up:

"What do you think about ghost writing? I'm in need of a writer to tell my story because I really do not have the time to write it and really don't know how to get started."

This is really two different questions, depending on whether you are… Continue

Pope kicks off red slippers and wonders why he came

Pope's visit satisfies few

Analysis: After a five-day visit to the Holy Land, the Pope may be wondering why he came. By Matt Beynon Rees - GlobalPost

JERUSALEM — As the Pope’s special El Al flight departed Tel Aviv for Rome Friday at the end of his five-day visit to the Holy Land, he might have kicked off his red slippers, dropped his seat into recline, and wondered why he bothered to… Continue
