Ellroy Queen: Megan Abbott’s Writing Life

Megan Abbott is the female James Ellroy. When I read her Edgar-award-winning “Queenpin,” I immediately was put in mind of everyone’s favorite noirmeister. Dig it. Even more I loved “The Song is You,” in which Abbott took a real-life missing persons case from 1949 and plumbed her Hollywood characters for real… Continue

Redhead of the Week is Hot, Hot, Hot

Firestar (Angelica "Angel" Jones) is a fictional mutant superhero in the Marvel Comics universe. She can generate and manipulate microwave radiation, creating intense heat and flames. She can also fly. In the comics, Firestar has been a member of the Hellions, the New Warriors, and the Avengers. In the cartoon from which she originated, she was a member of the X-Men and, later, of the Spider-Friends.

Firestar was originally created for the… Continue

The Word

When I was in high school, they called me the walking dictionary due to several factors: I always loved words, as did my mom, and I was on the debating team. My vocabulary was always being stretched by one or more of those things, and like coins deposited in a piggy bank, I kept adding to it.

Then I taught high school for thirty years, which tended to push me in the opposite direction. I had to keep putting things into terms that tenth graders could grasp, which meant I didn't use a… Continue

Killer Career Now at Barnes & Noble

I received some fantastic news about my new release, KILLER CAREER. It's now available in Barnes & Noble stores, as well as on their database. I'm still waiting to hear back from Borders and Books-A-Million.

Killer Career is about a lawyer whose decision to quit her day job could be a killer. That's because her mentor, a NY Times bestselling author does more than write about murders. Her law partner isn't too happy about her leaving, either. Does he mean more to her… Continue

Planning?

In the world of writing, as in the world of business, failing to plan is planning to fail. However, I am regularly reminded that spontaneity is an important part of keeping a personal life together. The challenge is that when one has a job and an all-consuming hobby, it’s hard to make spur-of-the-moment decisions. How do we handle this apparent life conflict?

Me? I plan to be spontaneous tomorrow.

What a Rush!

I wrote last week about giving up on a story I was trying too hard on. It felt artificial and difficult. Yuck.

But that feeling of oh-my-god-I've-got-to-write-this-down is now in high gear. Boy, have I missed it. My Other Idea is obviously the one I should have been working on all summer, because it has all the signs of a winner: monopolizing my mind, keeping me way too long at the computer, and making my friends and family wonder why I'm so distracted and disinterested in real life… Continue

Author Update

Borders Express manager Russ really took good care of me yesterday. When I arrived the posters were up, he had been handing out bookmarks all week and there was a table at the entrance for me to take over. Oddly, now that I had copies of Russian Roulette available, just as many people still wanted the earlier Hannibal Jones books. Not that I mind. Once they’re hooked they return for the new book and Borders Express in Westfield Mall will have them.

On line, my friend and fellow… Continue

So you want to write about the FBI?

There appears to be some confusion as to the exact nature of all the alphabet branches of our government. You know, FBI, CIA, NSA, ATF, etc. For some reason, they tend to be used somewhat interchangeably in various fiction books. In order to help clear up the differences, Special Agent Bill Whatrights of the FBI has agreed to answer a few questions for us.

Hello Agent Bill. Nice to meet you.

Um, that’s Special Agent Whatrights.

Sorry. Special Agent… Continue

Confused about Networking and Self-promotion? Don’t ‘drop your pants’ just yet – there may be hope!

With so many social networking sites available on the Internet, I thought I’d do some research to discover the emerging Do’s and Don’t’s of Self-Promotion. After all, one doesn’t want to become known as a Dreaded Spammer. On the other hand, we all know that “Bench Advertising Works”, so in that spirit, I set out to uncover the mysteries of Global Networking.

According to the experts, the following are the… Continue

In a serial killer's hunting ground

I am a writer and actor, I was in a movie called Nun of That (about psycho killer nuns) and we filmed one day at a strip club called K2U in Woonsocket, RI. By total coincide I went to a bookstore the next day and picked up a copy of the book RIPPER by Linda Rosencrance. The book is about a serial killer, Jeffrey Mailhot, who strangled several women. He would go to K2U, get drunk, and pick up his victims there or on the way home from K2U. It was weird knowing I had been at K2U the day before.
