Swedish novelist Henning Mankell recently called a halt to his mega-bestselling Inspector Wallander series with the novel The Troubled Man. According to an interview that Mankell gave to the BBC, Wallander is now aged over 60 and is brooding over his life. "I let Wallander look backwards to see 'What did I do with my life?', and for him it is a bit…

What an eye opener! There was a great response to my last week’s blog on the search
for the whereabouts of a good Latina/o Mystery. Authors, friends of authors
and, I’m sure, los primos de authors responded with clues on
how to find exactly what I’d been looking for. My list grows and, if you take a
look at the comment sections at…

I’m on the case. After browsing through many mysteries at a very popular bookstore in Brooklyn, I came home and took a picture of one of my bookshelves. I had to prove to myself that there are books written by Latinos. It’s true, there are no Latino mysteries anywhere in my apartment. The lack of them remains to me, a mystery.
I’ve had notions of various mystery…

Born into poverty in 1895, Ruth Brown had big dreams. As a teenager in New York, she longed for the fancy clothes she saw in department stores, but her job as a telephone operator barely paid the rent. Determined to get ahead, she took shorthand classes and dreamed of marrying Prince Charming.
And soon did. She landed a job at Boating Magazine as…

Anyone had this rather kafkaesque experience with Google's authoritarian algorithms? We had a Google ad, then took it down to update it, then got a reply that contained this:
"It has come to our attention that your Google AdWords account does not comply with our Terms of Service and Advertising Policies. As a result, your account and any related accounts have been suspended, and your ads will no longer run on Google. Please be aware that you are prohibited from possessing or…

Today, I have officially launched Gelati Media. What exactly is that? Good question. I have created this to encompass all that we do here at Gelati’s Scoop, The G-ZONE Blogtalk Radio Show, and the freelance work we do. We have a new website set up for it, a new landing pad if you will: www.gelatimedia.com.
The tabs take in:

I think you may have heard me say many times on my blogtalk radio show The G-ZONE that Sam Lang is: “one sick puppy”. Now I say that in the best possible way because what Sam Lang writes is horror, and he writes it rather well, maybe too well. He has a penchant for cranking up the tension, raising the suspense level and also for having a very dry, cutting sense of humor. When you combine all those qualities, I think that makes for some goose bumps and really good horror reading.…

My review of Killing Kate by Julie Kramer was in last month’s issue of The Big Thrill – the newsletter of
the International Thriller Writers. Julie Kramer gave us lots of thrills and suspense in the first three installments of her bestselling series about TV reporter Riley Spartz. Learn about her latest

If you missed my Monday post yesterday, it's a Tuesday post today. I was in transit from BoucherCon to home, and I just couldn't fit any more in.
Today is catch-up day, but I had to say here how much fun Bcon was, even though I often feel like a small fish in a big pond at such events. Rubbing elbows with the greats of our field, meeting lots of fans, and talking, talking, talking about books is a great way to take a break from real life and at the same time learn what is real in…

Some time has passed since the big Virginia Writers Club Symposium, but I didn’t want to just let it
pass without telling you what a big success it was. There were a dozen great presentations by the likes of Brad Parks and John Gils trap.J effrey Deaver’s keynote address earned a standing ovation.T he panel I was on, about marketing went over very well. And the Club is already planning a similar event next year, again at Piedmont Virginia…

Keeping up with the “Call Me Smitty” series has been a real pleasure for me. I guess that is a funny thing to say about reading about an assassin or hitman right? The pleasure in it is not the carnage and death, the ethical questions it brings up, the constant ponderings as to whether Smitty is a good guy or a bad guy, but in the ability of the author. B.R. Stateman’s unique ability to craft a story, to draw me in, to get inside my head and make me ask those questions time and time again.…
