Look at this article from the New Yorker. An interesting take on the Wal-Mart/Amazon pricing wars.

I haven't a clue what I am doing with this blog. But, in the grand effor to push your own books and be that consummate salesman, I've decided to create a blog for the Turner Hahn/Frank Morales police-procedurals I'm writing.
Comments, guffaws, and out-right insults will be appreciated. Find it at

Just found this article about the possible demise of the hardback novel. Kindle is doing a wonderful job (sarcasm, here) in killing off a dinosaur. Or . . . at least drastically changing the business model.

A couple of weeks ago I mentioned to everyone in here that I signed contracts with Shadow Line Press for a novel of mine entitled
Death of a Young Lieutenant.
Well, tonight I found in the mail a second contract from Shadow Line for the second Turner Hahn/Frank Morales novel entitled
A Taste of Old Revenge. I've shared the on-going artwork of building the cover for this book, if you'll remember.
Now. . . I'll sign the contract and hope one--or…

Just heard from the publisher my novel,
Ffolkes' Medicine is gearing up to go into the pre-preduction stages. From what it sounds like, it should see the light of day say somewhere around. . . oh . . . Spring of 2050?
Maybe sooner.
But it's a different kind of detective novel. A loud mouth pirate living in Port Royal, Jamaica in the 17th Century. The perfect place to find a dead body or two lying around on a daily basis since it was the pirate haven of the…

Suppose you decide to download your book on Kindle. Can you also put it on Barnes&Noble's new reader when it comes out? Are we going to see turf wars and proprietary clauses on published works between all the readers?
Does this scenario appear to be even remotely possible?

I caught a glimpse of a story somewhere about Little, Brown&Co. thinking about coming up with a new crime fiction imprint. Anyone else hear anything?
Neil. . . . care to comment?

So here I am sitting in front of the computer and writing this little ditty and thinking, "What's next?"
I've got a book out called
Murderous Passions. But you (or many of you) already know that. It's not Literature and it's not trash--actually a few people have read it and liked it. And some sterling (and I do mean that sincerely) reviews have been posted on Amazon, in here, and on Barnes&Noble.
But the book is in the backwaters of nowhere as far as…

There's talk going on that CBS is thinking about rebooting the old '70's cop show 'Hawaii Five-O.' J.J. Abrams (the latest Star Trek movie,) is being mentione being involved--so it has the potential of having a good prduction qualities to it.
But who'll play the head role Jack Lord (I think that was his name) had as the lead? Like all other reboots, you gotta sit back and take the wait-and-see attitude. It might work. It might not.

Royalty statement came in for one of my books--the police-procedural series I'm writing. Oddly enough, I get the strongest impression I'm being screwed. When the book came out it was within three months of the first royalty reporting months. It sold X number of books. This second royalty statement comes almost a year to the publishing date later. A year's worth of advertising, book signings, internet ads, discussions, blogging---a year's worth of getting several very good reviews from fans and…

Did you see the story about J.K. Rowling being denied a National Freedom Medal because some wag in the Bush administration believed Rowling's Harry Potter books were promoting witchcraft? Isn't it just swell our country is filled with intelligent, college-trained professionals and not by narrow minded religious crackpots! It makes me all giddy inside.

Just signed with Shadow LIne Press contracts to have them bring out 'Death of a Young Lieutenant.'
Nope, no up-front money. But some nice royalty percentages if the thing sells. Haven't heard exactly when it'll come out. Sometime before 2050, I'm sure. I've got book two of the series more or less done. Yeah, I'm a little pumped over this.

Dan Brown's new book sold a million copies on its first day. A million copies. Take in this, along with James Patterson's megablock deal, and I would suggest the health of the publishing industry is, in some respects, quite healthy.
How the hell does an author sell a million books? There are lots of well-known authors out there who have good reputations and a sizeable following. But they don't come close to hitting the numbers like Brown's new book did. I think this is a perfect…

I have an incredible talent. It's called Foot-In-Mouth Disease. It seems all if have to do is open my mouth. And then . . . . holy french fries! People go ballistic on me! I mean they get so upset their blood pressure has the same pressure-wave signature of a tsunami!
A talent whih probably has kept me from getting published sooner. Now, if I could make money with this talent. . . . .
