Candy canes, mistletoe, gifts, trees.....
Are you of the "bah humbug" frame of mind; all fed up with tinsel, shopping, and "ho, ho, ho"?
Or are you into the season, cuddled up by the fire with a cup of steaming cocoa and watching It's A Wonderful Life?
I'm more of the latter persuasion. Although living in Florida for most of my life, I enjoy a brisk north wind and the crisp autumn-like feel of our winter weather. Attended an outdoor party a couple…

I guest-blogged on The Stiletto Gang's website on December 17, 2009:
Recently, I had the good fortune to have two short stories included in anthologies. So when The Stiletto Gang (I have to work that name into one of my mystery novels) offered me the chance to guest blog for them, I decided to try and write something in praise of the short story.
Considering the season, I was not surprised when the image of Dickens’ Tiny Tim came to mind during my brainstorming. Not…

It's time to share what I hate about the Christmas season, and I make no excuses for it.
I hate decorating. In late fall my friends and acquaintances start talking about "doing" the house, some with anticipation, some with resignation. I refuse. I don't like the clutter, I don't enjoy the disruption, and I see no reason to turn my house into a wannabe Wal-Mart.
I realize this might put me in the grinch category, but otherwise I do okay. I arrange and conduct a huge…

I've probably mentioned I'm part of this year's Toys for Tots anthology from Wolfmont, titled THE GIFT OF MURDER. Now I can tell you that I recommend it, since I finished in this morning over breakfast.
I'm pleased to have been included in the anthology, an entertaining mix of holiday crime stories. A great gift for the readers on your holiday list, since you get 19 chances to please instead of just one, and you support a worthy cause at the same time.
Nice work, Tony…

A couple years ago I asked readers to tell me what they most liked and hated about Christmas. Here's what they said. The list works for every year, so I guess that means we're a consistent people. Any additions or corrections?
I like Christmas because
reindeer fly, monsters become good guys, and the ugliest Christmas tree is O.K.
poor and rich, wise and ignorant, powerful and powerless, all stop and consider their purpose
you get to see people at…

Book review written by Denise Grones
Fresh Frozen by Darden North, Ponder House Press
Where else do you find a handsome, young doctor, a gorgeous socialite, a thief, a flamboyant personal shopper and a grisly murder plot? All in a Darden North novel, of course. North, a Cleveland native and practicing obstetrician and gynecologist in Jackson, has just released his third medical…

Before I forget, correction. I had the wrong figures on Friday. The quote calls for 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration. The message is the same, just ignore the math. And thanks for noticing.
Anyway, my thought today is nice people. There just aren't enough of them in the world, and I often wish I were better at being one. On Saturday a man I'd never seen before gave me the nicest compliment I've had in months. He did it just to be nice, and it made me think what a great place the…

With a bad economy, not-shopping has become cool. Instead of people bragging about how they found the Toy of This Year's Quest for their little darling or the latest gadget-that-we'll-never-fully-decipher for their spouse, we hear comments about cutting back made with a tone of "I'm such a good person for doing this." Newspapers are full of chatty little articles about how to have a scaled-down Christmas: play board games at home instead of going on expensive vacations, create homemade gifts…
