My Agent is Retiring and So What???!!

Holy Crap, have things changed in the span of one year or what?

Ok, I'm sitting here on my bed in my apartment in Italy that I rent once a

year, same as I've been doing every year for the past three Falls. Like

most of Italy, the ancient buildings are the same, the good natured

people are the same, the priceless works of art are the same, the old

recipes are still melt in you mouth, the Tuscan hills still damp from

almost daily rains, the olive groves lush with… Continue

New Orleans Noir: Clean Hands and Tipped Scales

Have a taste for Crystal sauce, bayou mysteries or Big Easy gangbangers? I have just the thing for your bad appetites: I write New Orleans Noir.

My most recently published work is "Clean Hands and Tipped Scales" at ThugLit, Issue #36. An excerpt is below:

“Somebody tell you this banger was smoking a joint when he got jumped?”

Detective Sergeant Ferraris smells like the bad gumbo…

From Hitler History to Mahler Mystery: J. Sydney Jones’s Writing Life

Some authors exude the pleasure of reading and writing (and, surprisingly, when you meet them, many just don’t.) J. Sydney Jones is such a man, with a breadth of writing experience in a range of genres that’s deeply impressive and carries with it an obvious love of his craft. His Viennese Mystery series is a fascinating way to delve into one of Europe’s loveliest, most cultured cities – and damned entertaining, too. He’s also the…

Almost there!

Hard to believe that it's only a couple of months until CITY OF DRAGONS is released. It's been a fast-moving year!

To celebrate, I'm running a contest in December and January for a scarce ARC--combined with a basket of themed gifts from San Francisco's Chinatown.

Just go to my website at http://www.kellistanley.com/newsletter.html and sign up for my newsletter. It's spam-free and not very frequent.… Continue

My bizarro-crime book SQUID PULP BLUES is now available...

My second book SQUID PULP BLUES is now available from Eraserhead Press. It's a collection of 3 novellas taking place in the same sleazy NJ town of Thompson. It's bizarro crime fiction.

"An intriguing mix of film noir storytelling strained through a colander of pure bizarro." – TOM PICCIRILLI, author of A CHOIR OF ILL CHILDREN and THE MIDNIGHT ROAD.

"Krall explores Thompson (an overt homage to legendary crime writer Jim Thompson), New Jersey in all of its… Continue

Food Noir

Restaurants aren’t just snow white tablecloths and smiling hostesses. While you’re out trying to have a good time, eat a nice meal, the owner is treading a thin line between giving you what you paid for and making a profit. Sometimes they cross that line. That’s where I come in. My name’s Sundae. I’m a health inspector.

It was hot the way only the Strip District can be hot. The seams in the pavement were as tacky as freshly chewed gum on the soles of my shoes. The smells of… Continue

New Paperback Agreement

Well, at long long last my publisher is going to make me legit and rescue me from the twilight that is ebooks and audiobooks only. He recently informed me via email that he was adding my entire series thus far (five novels) to the paperback print queue. I am cautiously elated. I know what kind of legwork and self-promotion it's going to take from my end, but that's something that I have been prepared to embark on for a long time. I have plans within plans, as Frank Herbert once wrote. In any… Continue

Raise Your Hand If You're Hiding from Life

Why do we write? The pay is lousy, the hours before a computer are long, and forget about fame in the current state of publishing where some dumb celebrity or crooked politician will sell anything his ghost writer puts on paper before a real writer gets anywhere. I have a theory that writers find more satisfaction in the world of their own creation than there is in the real one.

Most of us participate in reality. We have jobs, families, and social obligations. But in that other world… Continue

Not at His Best in SERENADE, Cain Was Still Able

Serenade James M. Cain (1937)

As Serenade opens, protagonist Jack Sharp is banished from Paradise, subsisting in Mexico as a kind of operatic stumblebum. He lost both his golden voice and his European Eden when he deserted his muse over the sin of homosexuality. The agent of his temptation and fall was rich, charming Winston Hawes, his maestro and mentor in Paris.

In his Mexico hell, Jack nevertheless finds his Eve, a three-peso whore named Juana Montes, who… Continue

The Most Riveting Movie Moment Ever

I heard someone speak of this as the scene in The Great Dictator where Chaplin as Hitler makes sport with the globe of the world. And I’m sure you have an opinion, which I’m anxious to hear about. Mind you, I’m not looking for movie quotes like “Make my day” or “We’re in for a bumpy night.” What I’m after are those moments of cinematic action that seem to symbolize and say so much more than the constituent elements of the scene.

So what’s my candidate for the most riveting… Continue

Money Shot by Christa Faust

Wow, what a novel!

On an average year, I'll pick up about 150 books, finishing about 70. Of those 70, a handful or two I'll give five out of five stars over at my LibraryThing account. Obviously, Money Shot got five stars.

It's been almost a month since I finished Money Shot, and I can't stop thinking or talking about it. Faust's novel has it all: perfect pacing, dead-on dialogue,… Continue

Five Noir Essentials

What Is Noir, Anyway?

You know the drill - crime fiction comes in lots of flavors. Stuff like ‘cozy,’ ‘police procedural,’ ‘hardboiled,’ and ‘noir.’ Each of these sub-genres adheres to certain conventions in the presentation of character and subject matter. What follows is my take on the ‘noir’ tradition, including my personal interpretation of this small, but influential slice of the whole.

With the rise of crime as a popular subject for fiction in the nineteenth century,… Continue
