NEW New Orleans Novel

I keep saying it – she’s not big and there’s nothing easy about New Orleans. She is a beautiful tragedy, as is Coco Robichaux, the alluring victim in BARONNE STREET by Kent Westmoreland. There is nothing more tragic than the death of someone young. yes""> Jest before her death, Coco leaves a message on her ex-lover’s answering machine, a…

Watch for a lot of mystery related articles in this month's issues of Kings River Life magazine.

A Q & A on The Suffocating Sea, the third in the Inspector Andy Horton marine mystery crime series

I did this Q & A session recently for the Chichester Book Club web site and thought Id' post it here. It's based on the third novel in the Andy Horton marine mystery crime series, The Suffocating Sea, which is available in paperback and as an unabridged audio book and e book.

Working on the plot of Inspector Andy Horton crime novel number seven

Having used up tons of scraps of paper (re-cycled from having to print off reams of previous manuscripts) and having almost worn my pencil down to a stub, not to mention making my office look like a waste paper tip, I am now a great deal happier with the plot of the next Andy Horton police procedural marine mystery crime novel, which will be number seven in the series set on the south coast of England around the…

Dead, White, and Blue - Preview of Number 4 of the Al Pennyback mystery series

Prologue

Near Lost City, West Virginia

The autumn morning was ablaze with the orange and red of the oak and maple trees that covered the undulating hills that lined the road. A gentle breeze wafted lazily through the woods, making a soft whispering sound. Fluffy clouds dotted the light blue sky.

Two men, dressed in green and black camouflage suits and carrying 30/30 rifles, stood idly beside the two lane blacktop road, looking back up the slope… Continue

I've received a copy of the Turkish edition of my crime thriller novel In Cold Daylight

I knew it was being published in Turkey but didn't know when. And I always get a buzz when I see one of my books translated into another language. This one looks good. I believe the Turkish publisher has changed the title of the book, but I've no idea what it means. Perhaps someone who speaks Turkish might tell me. (Title is below).

In Cold…

You should write a crime novel...

Write what you know, that's what they always say. You work as a crime reporter, why don't you write a crime novel?

My immediate answer: I can't handle plot. And I hate descriptive writing. Facts, ideas, characters maybe. I like to observe people; what they say, their motives and psychology. I don't care what kind of sound the gravel makes under my foot or exactly how black the night sky is on a cold November evening. I don't want to write about weeping mothers and orphaned…

Writing first drafts of novels-exciting, tense and frustrating

Authors differ on their approach to writing first drafts, some love it, some hate it and many are somewhere in between. Me? Well, I find writing first drafts exciting, tense and very often frustrating. Exciting because it is fresh unchartered waters and although I have a basic plot outline and character sketches I'm still not sure where the tide will take me and which shore my novel will wash up on. Tense because I am in a hurry to write it as fast as I can while my head is…

Third Al Pennyback e-Book now available.

I finally finished the third of my Al Pennyback mystery series. I've been working on this particular series for over eight years and have about ten rough drafts stored away. Every now and then, I get a call from the muse, and I take one out and begin to cut, slash, rewrite and agonize to get it into readable form. I think number three is better than the first two - "Memorial to the Dead" starts with a corpse in front of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in Washington, DC and starts our hero…
