I shall be at Crimefest on 20 May on a panel discussion with fellow crime writers - looking forward to it

I'm delighted to be returning to Crimefest in May 2011 at the Bristol Royal Marriott Hotel and will be on a panel discussion on Friday 20 May at 9am. Crimefest is a convention for people who like to read an occasional crime novel as well as for die-hard fanatics. It is now one of the most popular dates in the crime fiction calendar and draws top crime novelists, readers, editors, publishers and reviewers from around the world. It follows… Continue

Crime writing can be a messy process

So I have the idea. I do some research. I work it up into an outline plot with a smattering of characters and then I start writing. This is when it gets messy.

1. The brain dump or free flow

First up is the free flow type of writing when I'm eager to bring the idea and characters to life by getting words and actions on to my computer screen as quickly as possible. Often these are not the correct words, the description is hazy, the characters not fully formed, the grammar and… Continue

Farewell to 2010 - it's been an enjoyable and productive year

I've enjoyed writing and undertaking many speaking engagements and media appearances throughout the year. I've met some fascinating people and made lots of new friends. As 2010 draws to a close I thought it appropriate to thank my many readers, my publishers, booksellers, agents, those who have supported me in the book trade and the media, and in the libraries across the UK, the Commonwealth and the USA.

Here is a quick round up and some of the highlights of 2010 which…

Great Review of Death Dance from Mystery Women

'This is a fast-moving, skilfully-written tale, told with lots of humour, plenty of twists and turns and a convincing ending. The author, who has a well-deserved reputation for clever crime fiction that keeps the reader guessing until the end, will certainly not disappoint her ever-increasing number of fans with her latest novel. I recommend it very highly.’ Mystery Women on Death Dance

New reviews

Excellent Puzzle. one of your best.

I’m thrilled with the reaction to A CANTERBURY CRIME. ‘The story is totally unpredictable and never loses the reader's rapt attention. Brenda and Hazel are witty, irksome, sharp, and pleasure-loving characters who are the perfect detectives, barely managing to elude disaster by the most dire, unsavory criminals imaginable!’ More splendid reviews on this link,…

Three more appearances in 2010 and then it's looking ahead to 2011

I've got three more appearances and talks to come before the year draws to a close. On 27 November I will be at Waterstones in Portsmouth (UK) between 12 noon and 2pm signing copies of my crime novels or just chatting to readers and anyone else who happens to pass by and is foolish enough to give me eye contact!

Then on 15 December I will be travelling to Broad Chalke in Salisbury to give a talk to the Women’s Institute, which is followed by a trip across the Solent to the Isle of… Continue

Technophobe no more!

I'm starting to get so techno-savvy, it's frightening! I've just uploaded my very first video on this site (and youtube, blogger, twitter and facebook). I'm now the proud owner of a blog and will soon have Down Among the Dead Men out as an ebook. This is the second novel in my humorous Rafferty & Llewellyn crime series and was first published by Macmillan/St Martin's Press and Worldwide in 93/94 and is long out of print. Now it's going to get a whole new life as an…

Inspiration or Perspiration?

It's time to choose the next book. My second Simon & Elizabeth (POISON, YOUR GRACE) and my paranormal, THE DEAD DETECTIVE AGENCY, are both in the editing process, so there is nothing I can do about them until I get the editors' suggestions. My newest endeavor, which I titled DEAD INSIDE, is awaiting word from an agent or two. So what do I want to do next?

The perspiration part: write the third of the historical series. I have it outlined on my handy-dandy little tape recorder, and…

Finished Inspector Andy Horton number six and now have a title and blurb for it

I’ve finished the sixth Inspector Horton marine mystery crime novel which has now been sent to my publisher. At this stage of writing I have been through it so many times I could practically recite it by heart, so a fresh pair of eyes is very welcome.

And as to the title? Well here it is and the blurb. Let me know if you have any views on either or both.

Good Men

I read two books recently from authors I admire, and it's mostly because of the protagonists, who are good guys. Not perfect, but good. Solid. Understandable.

First is Jim Benn's Billy Boyle. Billy is an Irish cop who learns, with the help of World War II, that he isn't as lazy as he thought. One gets a sense that if Billy had stayed in the States, missed the war, he might have become a cynical, take-what-you-can-get type of cop, but war makes him look at the world differently. I… Continue

Three Elephant Review

'Corruption's Child,' third in the Sticks Hetrick mystery series, earned a three elephant ranking at Chris Speakman's ChrisChatReviews.

She said, in part, the series "constantly delivers a solid mystery" that leaves her guessing.
