Why is crime fiction so popular particularly with women?

I was recently asked this question by a journalist and although the percentage of women who read crime fiction is higher than men, I am pleased to say that I have both male and female readers of my crime and thriller novels.

So why are so many people drawn to reading crime fiction?

In crime fiction we know that justice will be done and the case will be resolved and that doesn’t always happen in real life. In crime fiction the villain either gets caught or gets his/her… Continue

Crime writing can be a messy process

So I have the idea. I do some research. I work it up into an outline plot with a smattering of characters and then I start writing. This is when it gets messy.

1. The brain dump or free flow

First up is the free flow type of writing when I'm eager to bring the idea and characters to life by getting words and actions on to my computer screen as quickly as possible. Often these are not the correct words, the description is hazy, the characters not fully formed, the grammar and… Continue

Farewell to 2010 - it's been an enjoyable and productive year

I've enjoyed writing and undertaking many speaking engagements and media appearances throughout the year. I've met some fascinating people and made lots of new friends. As 2010 draws to a close I thought it appropriate to thank my many readers, my publishers, booksellers, agents, those who have supported me in the book trade and the media, and in the libraries across the UK, the Commonwealth and the USA.

Here is a quick round up and some of the highlights of 2010 which…

Felt like I was in Brigadoon on Tuesday night, but without the kilts, the singing and the dancing

On Tuesday night I went to Brigadoon.  OK, not really but it felt like it. I gave a talk to the Women's Institute in the small picturesque Wiltshire village of Broad Chalke.  It had a kind of lost village feel about it tucked away down a narrow winding English country lane that gave me a sense of being in Brigadoon, (for those not familiar with it Brigadoon is a film about a lost village in Scotland which only appears once in every hundred years for one day, starring Gene Kelly, Van Johnson…

Three more appearances in 2010 and then it's looking ahead to 2011

I've got three more appearances and talks to come before the year draws to a close. On 27 November I will be at Waterstones in Portsmouth (UK) between 12 noon and 2pm signing copies of my crime novels or just chatting to readers and anyone else who happens to pass by and is foolish enough to give me eye contact!

Then on 15 December I will be travelling to Broad Chalke in Salisbury to give a talk to the Women’s Institute, which is followed by a trip across the Solent to the Isle of… Continue
