I just submitted my new book to my publisher! I'm waiting to hear what they think.
Finding the right title is an interesting process. This book started out as a short story published in Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine in December 2006. That story was written under the title "Murder at the Ass End of Nowhere." Ass End of Nowhere is a phrase from my childhood -- used to describe my small hometown, or the even more remote, rural parts of the county.
But EQMM doesn't do ass, so they published it as "Murder at the Butt End of Nowhere." That was fine with me. I was just delighted to see it in print. It was my first mystery short-story and my first submission to EQMM, which I love.
When I was writing the novel I considered calling it "Ass End of Nowhere," which I really liked because it has ass.
But late in the writing, I added a kind of prologue first chaper that began: "It Started With Sex." And that became my first choice for the title of the book: "It Started With Sex."
I also have a short story coming out in the May edition of Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine! Very exciting. It's called "Murder on the Main Line" and features a very unusual crime.
Let me know what you think.
