I just submitted my new book to my publisher! I'm waiting to hear what they think.

Finding the right title is an interesting process. This book started out as a short story published in Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine in December 2006. That story was written under the title "Murder at the Ass End of Nowhere." Ass End of Nowhere is a phrase from my childhood -- used to describe my small hometown, or the even more remote, rural parts of the county.

But EQMM doesn't do ass, so they published it as "Murder at the Butt End of Nowhere." That was fine with me. I was just delighted to see it in print. It was my first mystery short-story and my first submission to EQMM, which I love.

When I was writing the novel I considered calling it "Ass End of Nowhere," which I really liked because it has ass.

But late in the writing, I added a kind of prologue first chaper that began: "It Started With Sex." And that became my first choice for the title of the book: "It Started With Sex."

I also have a short story coming out in the May edition of Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine! Very exciting. It's called "Murder on the Main Line" and features a very unusual crime.

Let me know what you think.

You know, I remember reading an article about Anne Rice, and how a man came up to her and asked her if she did all the things she wrote, or was involved in some way...she was amazed...I think, some people just can't disassociate the writer from the story...

Yes, I found myself saying that the other day: "It's a story! Not a dissertation."

Ah, well...I know....some of what I will be hopefully publishing will have a strong reaction too from people who know me...but...it is what I write...and the story after all, IS just a story...

Ass End of Nowhere is a great title. I'm a little skeptical about using the word "sex." I thought "The Sex Club" would be a great title for my mystery/suspense novel. But no, some mystery readers are put off by it. Too late though, being in print now. Still a great story.

GAWDAMIGHTY...I love it!! hysterical:) I'm married to an Aussie and I know, he finds some of our rules peculiar...of course then, I loved being able to swear like a sailor and say bloody, bloody, bloody whenever I wanted and it meant nothing to me!;) It's amazing what you can get away with country to country isn't it? kinda refreshin'!:)

I like the very evocative Ass End of Nowhere a lot, though I’m partial to the more mellifluous English ‘arse’ which we Australians get to use. I love Americans to bits – I even married one once – but I’m still bemused by the fact that a magazine will do murder most foul and gruesome but draws the line at impolite language. Of course I’m someone who got Penguin to publish FAT, FIFTY & F***ED! Now that made for some rather interesting radio interviews.
