HEREAFTER still haunts me...

So I'm into my conversion of EL REY from script to novel form, hoping to iron out the kinks in the story whilst doing so, and my imagination stalls on me, taking me back in time to the not-so-salad-days of HEREAFTER, a story I wrote when I was feeling pretty low and overdosing on Dashiell Hammett/Clive Barker. I'm chalking this moment up to just being another angle of attack from the demon known as Procrastination (kind of like blogging), but I couldn't help getting lost in that story again…

The last days of The Last Days of El Rey

Well, I'm finally at the end of this monster. It's been two years of on-again, off-again romance, but, in the end, it finally seduced me to come back long enough to finish this time. I don't even really care that some of the scenes read like bad Mexican soap opera! The point is - it's done, and that's something I haven't been able to say about anything I've written for a very long time. I know it'll take several more passes to get it really tight, but there's something that's just inherently…

Early Endorsements for “A Circle of Souls”

Linda Fairstein, NYT Bestselling Author: "A fascinating debut - this novel takes the reader to the darkest places in the human soul, from a writer with the authenticity to lead us there. A stunning thriller and an important read."

Judge Judy Sheindlin, star of the Judge Judy Show: "The seminal work of this fine author kept me glued to my chair until the adventure was over and the mystery solved. A great read!"

Book Synopsis:

The sleepy town of Newbury, Connecticut, is shocked when a little girl is found brutally murdered. The town s top detective, perplexed by a complete lack of leads, calls in FBI agent Leia Bines, an expert in cases involving children.

Meanwhile, Dr. Peter Gram, a psychiatrist at Newbury s hospital, searches desperately for the cause of seven-year-old Naya Hastings devastating nightmares. Afraid that she might hurt herself in the midst of a torturous episode, Naya s parents have turned to the bright young doctor as their only hope.

The situations confronting Leia and Peter converge when Naya begins drawing chilling images of murder after being bombarded by the disturbing images in her dreams. Amazingly, her sketches are the only clues to the crime that has panicked Newbury residents. Against her better judgment, Leia explores the clues in Naya s crude drawings, only to set off an alarming chain of events.
In this stunning psychological thriller, innocence gives way to evil, and trust lies forgotten in a web of deceit, fear, and murder.

Nicholas, I sent you a note, I think, about checking out my CrimeSpace home page and getting a link to my friend's new Beat blog. I think you will enjoy it. I spent much of my youth in Lowell, off the Merrimack (sp?) River and the old drive-in movie. Had an aunt & uncle lived, I believe it was on Shirley Ave., can't believe I remembered that after all these years. My cousin Judy's is married to Joe Hart, who is a judge in Suffolk County these days, and their son Kevin is a big Kerouac fan. Let me know if you read the scroll. I am expecting mine any day now in the mail. Give my best to all of Lowell!
