Proud of being a POD Person - print-on-demand, that is

How much stigma is attached to publishing with a print-on-demand press? I've realized the stigma may be greater than confessing to a psychiatric diagnosis (in my case, bipolar disorder). But I believe that's changing rapidly, and that traditional publishers are stuck in the last Millennium. What do you think?

Personally, I'm delighted to have published two mysteries POD. I'd say more, but I've already been online far too long today, and I encourage you to read my thoughts elsewhere. My garden is calling and in need of a drink.

Glad this topic has sparked so much debate. And I'm glad to report I sold a lot of books at a book club discussion last Sunday. I spoke and fielded questions for an hour, and in passing I discussed POD and self-publishing, but those present weren't overly concerned with the issue. And it certainly didn't inhibit or influence their buying my books.

I think the general reading public could care less about how the book was published than what's between the covers (and it helps if they're good-looking covers :)).

I have heard some readers say, if you can't impress an agent or editor enough to get published the traditional way, why should I read your book? Thing is, not all POD published authors are created equal. Plus an author can come SO close to acceptance, but not get it. Plus some of us did have publishers once, so any stigma of rejection makes our jobs even harder. But if you can just get people to read your work and they like it, the rest should (in theory) follow (in time . . . years, perhaps?).
That's a good point about the readers not caring. Most probably think POD is that storage unit you can rent and put on your lawn, or a late 90s nu-metal band. Unless the audience is full of authors, I don't think it makes a huge difference. Even then, I think the response would be warm so long the work is high quality.

The last POD I read was fantastically terrible. I couldn't have enjoyed it drunk. I've yet to read a good one. But that's just it. I haven't read a good one yet.
Hey, Benjamin. I'll send you a copy of mine, if you want to take a chance on me. I think you might be pleasantly surprised. All I ask in return is that you post a review online somewhere (e.g., Amazon, GoodReads, Facebook, a blog, or an email list), if you like it.

Deal?
How could I say "no" to that?
Cool!
