"The most wonderful time of the year."

In the Dickeyville, Maryland area, five young friends meet and bond. They consider themselves like the five arms of a starfish. They are, Gwen, the Halloran brothers, Tim, Sean and Go Go, and the other girl, Mickey Wyckoff.

Their middle class area didn't require a lot of parental supervision on the children's playtime activities.

The novel moves between actions in the late 1970s and today.

In the current time, Gwen returned to care for her father who…

The New Millennium Brought a Serial Killer to Kauai

One of my favorite getaways is to the beautiful island of Kauai – and still is today.  All of the Hawaiian Islands are beautiful, but for some reason I enjoy the less crowded and somewhat remote areas of Kauai the best.  I love the local people, great food, and wonderful views.

One of my last visits about four years ago; I sat on a remote beach and thought to myself, “What if there was a killer on the loose here?”  Hey, it’s just a thought.  Many things go through a…

The Power of Words

Words have power. They can make someone’s day. (“You have beautiful eyes.”) Or, they can break someone’s heart. And we strive to do that in our novels.…

A Non-Review of Debbi Mack's Latest Sam McRae Crime Novel

Just wrote a review of Debbi Mack's newest crime novel in the Sam McRae series. It's called, Riptide, although the title could change. I slammed that sucker down in two days. One of the most enjoyable reads I've had all year.

It's not out yet, though, so I can't release the review. I got the ARC. Yep, I'm going to brag about that. This is a novel worth being a dick about.

Until then, here's…

Creating and developing characters is never an easy task, but there are numerous, easy ways to approach it. In this post, I’ll share my method for this madness, but keep in mind there are many other just as successful ways as well.

I tend to base a book off of a plot idea and then build the characters off of that plot. However, some authors prefer to start with the characters first,…

What I Learned from Reading Walter Mosley

One of the big events of the year at the school where I teach, Marygrove College in Detroit, MI, is our Contemporary American Authors Lecture Series held each April. This series, now in its twenty-fourth year, brings in a guest writer each year to give a free public reading and hold a master class with our own and area high school students.

As the chair of the department that hosts the event, I am the emcee for the evening, which means my job is to preside over the…
