Why A Published Author Will Decline to Read Your Unpubbed Manuscript...

We're all beginners at one time.

Therefore, we should all be ever-willing to help each other.

However, there are good reasons why an author will say, "No," if you ask him or her to read your unpublished manuscript.

1.) There's no upside. Here's what I mean. One author I know said, "Every time I read someone's manuscript they get mad about my comments. They SAY they want me to be honest, but .... It's not worth it." Yep, honesty can hurt. And ruin even good friendships.…

Everybody Loves Getting Something For FREE!

posted by Jeanne Munn Bracken

Today's sermon...er, blog... is about researchers of easy virtue. The ones who go directly to the New York Times website to find articles and other information. The ones who pay for articles rather than looking for them as freebies. The ones who have a house full of books they've read once but will never touch again unless they dust them once in a while or pack them to move. (Do you know what it costs to move books? We are already weeding out books…

Odious Billy Joe

The nice young preacher stepped onto the witness stand. The defense attorney, Merri Pason, approached, dark eyes downcast until the last moment, when they rose to lock on the nervous man's gaze. "You were there? On the bridge that day?"

"I, uh, saw what happened, yes. I was too late to stop him." The witness appealed to the watchful courtroom, the young couple from Tupelo, the listless mother, and the defendant, a young girl who seemed not to care what went on around her. "He jumped…

Hot-Handed God of Cops

I just saw John Woo's HARD BOILED (Chinese title: GOD OF GUNS or HOT HANDED GOD OF COPS) for the first time.

Total Body Count: 307.

Explosions.

Weapons with apparently endless supplies of ammo.

Friendship.

Betrayals.

Reversals of fortune.

Sacrifice.

Not one, but…

Your Online Book Promotion Campaign: Is It Working for You?

This is a question that I’m asked quite often. As a busy author, you want to focus your promotional efforts where they count most. But it’s often difficult to determine what’s working and what’s not unless a very specific, isolated promotion generates a huge volume of sales. I love analyzing things and have a very detailed system for tracking my sales success. Here are some basic tips:

  • Keep a detailed log of all your book promotion…

the james deans

Yes, im slow.

I'm very very slow.

But i just read THE JAMES DEANS.

WOW.

I can't describe what i loved about this book, in the same way i could never explain what i loved about the Matt Scudder books.

Also, i've been thinking about getting back to the fletch books. I've read the first one and a couple of others. Maybe its time to fill the gaps.

Nikki - Tell us a bit about how Whale Song came to be.

Cheryl - Whale Song arrived as a simple idea: ‘What if your mother died when you were young, a pre-teen?’ It then evolved to:…

July Reads

A small but perfect list of reads for July.

WHO IS CONRAD HIRST? - KEVIN WIGNALL

Protagonist: Conrad Hirst, Hitman

The short answer is that Conrad Hirst is a hitman who wants out of the business, the long answer is so much more involved, so much more poignant, so much more human. Rainitude!

posted by Doranna

I have rainitude.

Once upon a time, I lived way too many years in the lake effect country of western New York (a place where one of our esteemed bloggers still lives, and where we all have ties of one sort or another). The weather there can be described, in a one-word nutshell: Gloom. An average of 200 cloudy days a year, thank you very much, thanks to the various Great Lakes looming around (Ontario, Erie). In Rochester, if I was to think…

Where do story ideas come from? Or, truth is stranger than fiction

As a writer, I read newspapers and news magazines. It’s as mandatory as writing, as far as I’m concerned. I read to stimulate ideas. I don’t always read the headline stories, but look for the short pieces that carry unusual news. You never know when something strange might kick your imagination into gear. I can read a piece from Alaska and ask myself, “what if, in Key West . . .?”

I also watch TV news, both the Miami channels and CNN. I watched, as most of the world did, in horror…

Transports of Delight

Trains

Christmas 2002 I spent in the soft and comfortable bosom of my family near Peterborough. After a wonderful vacation we set off on what was to be the journey from hell. Christmas Day I got the flu and I was feeling pretty ill. I wasn't really looking forward to travelling anyway, but it was made all the worse by the fact that British Rail, in their infinite wisdom, had ripped up the railway tracks between York and Darlington, at the busiest time of year, so…

Lots of news

I've been saving up news for my debut blog post. First, my crime/horror/metaphysical thrller, Bad Thoughts, is now out. Second, I just sold two more books to Serpent's Tail. Here's the Publishers Marketplace announcement my intrepid agent, Sara Crowe, put out for it:

SMALL CRIMES author Dave Zeltserman's PARIAH, about a member of South Boston's Irish mob who commits a kidnapping gone very wrong and is later paid to write a fictionalized account of the crime, along with a second…

Glimpses into the life

I posted photos I thought people coming to Bouchercon 2007 might like to see. Some of them are a few years old (as you can tell by the infant or toddler, who is now nearly 7 years old)... but I was looking at what I took around the time of our upcoming Bouchercon and can get an idea of what we keep trying to explain. Yeah, I AM a firm believer that sometimes the images are better than the words. Enjoy!

The Frustrations of the Writing Business

I am busily promoting the latest book in my Deputy Tempe Crabtree series, Judgment Fire. My book launch is scheduled for this Saturday at our local Visitors Center. The publisher just okayed the proofs for the printer last Friday. The books were printed on Monday, the left the printer and using UPS tracking, I learned they had reached California this morning. Now, if nothing goes wrong, they should arrive on my doorstep tomorrow or the next day. Talk about…

The Undertow, Peter Corris

I've been doing some serious catching up with Ned Kelly Nominees, and with local Crime Fiction in general and it has been a stellar reading month because of it. The latest is another fine
and fun outing with Cliff Hardy in The Undertow by Peter Corris. For a

Roman Noir Hors d'Oeuvre

I had some great news that I can now share: my short story Convivium will be published by that most illustrious of noir e-zines, Hardluck Stories (founded by Crimespace member and noir man-about-town Dave Zeltserman).

It's an appetizer before the main course (don't worry--no honeyed dormice) and takes place four years earlier (79 AD) than the events of Nox Dormienda.

I'm proud and happy to be a part of… Continue
