- Hometown:
- Which one? Raised in little towns in Indiana and Illinois, lived in Chicago for many years, currently living in Evanston.
- About Me:
- I write crime novels under the names Sam Reaves and Dominic Martell. My Reaves books are Chicago-based crime novels, and my Martell books are espionage/intrigue novels set in Europe. These two author personas reflect my two very different sides: I'm a Middle American guy at home in Chicago, the quintessential American city, but I also lived in Europe for two years, speak six languages, and have traveled all over the world. They also allow me to experiment with style: the Reaves books are in the spare, economical American hard-boiled tradition while the Martell novels are a little edgier, off-the-wall, stylistically fluid. "Homicide 69", my police procedural set in Chicago in the summer of 1969, was published by Carroll and Graf in 2007. George Pelecanos called it "the big Chicago crime novel we've been waiting for". My new novel, entitled "Mean Town Blues", will come out from Pegasus in September, 2008. I'm currently working on a Martell novel set in Algiers in 1961. Pound those keys...
Here we go: I should, of course, be writing a novel. But I'm writing a blog post instead. Is it crucial promotional work or only an avoidance strategy, like my elaborate coffee rituals? Maybe a little of both. I'm hoping it can serve as a sort of warm-up exercise, a way to get the words flowing. Sometimes writing is easy, and sometimes it's hard, and recently it's been hard.
